Problems changing from cd rom to dvd rw

A friend of mine installed a dvd rw in place of a cd rom.

Problem is the dvd rw will not work as slave, but is cd rw did.

Its set up like this:
Master 1 - Hard disk drive
Slave 1 - Dvd rw
Master 2 - Dvd Rom
Slave 2 - Cd RW

Before it was setup:
Master 1 - HDD
slave 1 - CD-rw
Master 2 Dvd rom
slave 2 cd rom

The dvd rw will not work when another device is connected as a slave or master, but it will work on its own when it set as master.

any help would be great

It's unlikely, but you might you have to tell the hard disk that there's another device as the slave.

Sounds like the DVD-RW doesn't follow the IDE/ATAPI specification, if you've set all the jumpers correctly!
