8rd3ai electrical problems

I posted this in the Crashed forum but no one replied, so maybe I'll have more luck here:

Can anyone explain the weird electrical issues I'm having? There is no way they can be caused by an overheating CPU. My machine can't reboot it just powers down everytime, it makes it as far as displaying the video card splash screen right before it posts and then it turns off. Every time it powers down it won't turn back on unless I pull the power cable and let it sit for a minute. Anytime I plug the power cable into it the fan spins and the LED lights up for about half a second. It's totally weird.

Right now I'm waiting for some new artic silver to get here. I had replaced a dead 8rda+ but couldn't find my old AS so my heatsink is on there with what was left over and the machine won't stay on for more than a few minutes. I'm not positive it's overheating, but since its at 50c within a minute of boot up heat is my #1 suspect. But in addition to the heat I'm having the weird issue described above.

It sounds possible that the following may be occuring :-

1. System overheat through poor thermal integrity between die and HSF.
2. Mainboard intrusion through chassis - remove and replace mainboard into chassis ensuring it is not too tightly affixed and no points have partial intrusion effecting a short
3. Ensure the Windows installation is fully ACPI compliant.

Does sound a little flaky, but I'd feel pretty safe that the board is healthy enough.

thanks for the reply

I don't see how it can be solely heat, and I know it's not an OS issue. Which leaves the suggestion of the board being screwed down to tight. I've never heard of this before, what exactly is going on in a situation like that? The board isnt grounded right or something? If that is whats wrong, can it damage the board?

Success! I loosened the screw on my motherboard, slid it a little, then retightened them not quite as tight as before. I also applied some artic silver. It's now running fine with no problems at all. I can OC even more with the 8rda3i than I could with the 8rda+. Thanks for the help everyone!

If only a lot of people by e-mail support would take heed of advice sometimes rather than professing that they are the experts rather than us
