Thank you Merlin

Btw, i'm going to try that within a few days, i need my comp to finish my exams so i'm not about to take any unnessesary risks. But i'd say a lot of ppl are interested in this.

Do i need to remove the hardware placed L12 mod for not getting into trouble with the bios based L12 mod?

-------------edit 20-08-2006, small summary until now.---------

The modded bios can be found here:

http://users.telenet.be/denthomas/AO...D_17.01.05.rar

http://members.lycos.co.uk/m4rd0k/Bios/Epox%208RDA6+/

Features:

Look in OP

Switches required for flashing the bios chip with the modded bios:

awdflash.exe 8RDA6PRO.BIN /py /sn /cc /cd /cp /QI /F /R

Note that some power saving functions won't work anymore, pchealth screen in the bios is frozen and you need to disconnect the PSU for +10 secs when you cold boot the system.

There is talk about 2 releases. A cpc on and cpc off version. This can be confusing because both releases are actually the same file and thus are both cpc on.

There are some newer releases other than the recommended modded bios however those are not sufficiently tested. Feel free to test and contradict me

Bios binary files are the same for both the 8RDA6+Pro and the 8RDA3+Pro and it will work for both boards.

The modded bios is based on the October 05-2004 official release.

History and reasons for the first and recommended modded bios can be found in MietmaN's post at the bottom of this page (post #20).

That's about it.

Thanks again Merlin

Talking

Thanks a lot for your work - I hope many people will benefit from this!
Is this bios with CPC On or Off? (I would try both of them, though I prefer 1T )

@Wolf2000me - I also need my PC for my work, but I'm gonna try this custom bios really soon (I'm a geek, I know ). As far as I know you don't have to remove the hardware L12 mod - me too, besides this I don't know if mine is even working properly - FSB222 is the threshold of stability, no matter if single or dual, no matter if 1x512MB or 2x512MB (although it shoud not be so).

I must say, after reading MietmaNs post in the low memory .... thread i'm amazed on how fast this Bios has been made. It's like bios-on-demand.

I do have a lot of stability issues all of the sudden while i didn't do anything in particular. I've posted it in the crashed section. But it has nothing to do with this bios or thread. Until that's resolved i can't possibly try anything else

Potential Problem!!

has anyone successfully flashed this bios? I tried to flash it and my comp would not successfully post and stopped with C3 on the LED. I hot flashed my bios back to the October bios to get my computer running again. I then re-downloaded the Merilin bios and then flashed it again. It failed again with C3 on the LED on boot. I am now going to hot flash the bios again and wait to hear if anyone can get this going before I try again.

Thumbs up

I'm gonna flash this bios within an hour and probably do some quick tests (mostly on memory bandwidth ). Since I'm going to Germany in 36 hours, I have to make'em really quickly - will write something tomorrow, when I've finished.

Thanks whole lot Merlin, once again.

Thanks!

Could anyone post me some decent links on measurements to take? It's probably the same as flashing an official one but i've never flashed a custom bios with this kind of changes. What kind of typical problems could i expect? Just so i can try to pinpoint a problem to a setting. Or are these going to roughly be the same as OC problems?

OMG, it IS indeed fast!!!!

I've already flashed that beast (although it's 2:30 AM in Poland now) and done some basic tests - I'll give the results later, hopefully in the morning.

I flashed using awdflash V8.54B (one of the latest versions) and the following parameters : /py/sn/cc/cd/cp/IQ/F/R. I used my WinME custom boot disk for simulating DOS enviroment. I didn't encounter any problems at all, no stability issues so far and in comparision with the stock bios it's a demon of speed and memory bandwidth, at least at FSB200.

I can recommend this beta version to everyone!

ALT F2 Method works great

The easiest way to flash this bios is to put the .bin file on a floppy and then when your computer boots, quickly hit the ALT and F2 keys. That will lauch the internal Award Flasher and automatically grab the bios from the floppy and flash it for you.

The first custom bios, that one with CPC On (1T) is not only fast, but stable (my PC has been running almost 24 hours, without any stability issues).

IMHO it could remain as it is - I mean that beta should be final!

Some results later, probably this night.

@toonces311 :
I can't use the Alt+F2 method, cause that bulit in flash program says, that this bios is not for my mobo - the same situation was with non-modified Epox bioses. These are all for 8RDA6+ PRO and although they are also for 3+ PRO, they won't flash without "IQ" parameter (at least in my case).

MietmaN,

My bad. I did not realize that the ALT F2 doesn't work for the 3+ Pro board. Makes sense. FYI It works fine for the 6+ Pro.

I can also say that this bios is very fast and stable. I have my XP mobile running at 2.2Ghz set with 210FSB and 10.5 multipyler. Up now for about 24hours with no problems. I have transcoded multiple DVDs and MP3s. Thanks again Merlin!!

great work, merlin! thanks a lot!

I started testing the bios today. after having some memory timing problems may system is running stable (some prime and memtest) now with 10 x 233 mhz.

the mobile xp 2600+ is recognized well @ 2330 mhz. (vcore: 1,50 v; all other votages: default)
everesthome memory read performance: 3440 Mb/s. with 2 x 512 MB MDT - a rather unexpensive german brand.

with the regular epox bios (sept. 2004) I had my system running with 9.5 x 233 mhz @ 1,475 v vcore (3320 MB/s). L 12 mod by wire from the very beginning.

Some benchmarks and tests, using Merlin's bios with CPC On :

11x200, FSB200 ROMSIP table
V-core 1.50v, 2x512MB dual 2-3-3-11, Win2k SP4, nVidia unified drivers 4.27, Catalyst 4.12 (balanced settings), DirectX 9.0c

* Sandra 2004 SP1
Int : 3062 MB/s, 3063 MB/s (96% efficiency)
Float : 2886 MB/s, 2885 (90% efficiency)

* Everest Home
read - 2983 MB/s
write - 1218 MB/s

* 3DMark 2001SE

* SuperPI
2M - 01m 43s, 01m 43s

and now compare them to the default Epox bios at 11x200, FSB200 ROMSIP table :
