Also, do PCI SATA cards work as fast with SATA drives (transfer rate, access time, etc.) as the SATA controller provided by the nforce3 chipset? How does CPU utilization compare? Thanks, it will save me time researching this if anyone knows off hand.

sata 1 and 2 run on the NF3 so this is the fastest. 3 and 4 run on the pci bus so max is 133 mb/s.
a pci sata controler will take about the same CPU power as sata 3/4 will do.

The main question is whether a PCI Sata card will allow additional HDD's to boot when overclocking on higher FSBs. Because Sata 3 & 4 are "unlocked" (unlike Sata 1 & 2, which remain stable regardless of FSB frequency) adding a 3rd Sata HDD on 3 or 4 results in a failure to detect drive at high FSB frequencies.

Anyone tried a PCI Sata card with high FSBs?

Thanks

3 and 4 also run on the NForce 3 Ultra from a PHY - the same as the LAN and audio do.

If you are running a PCI card on a locked bus you will have no problems - so my advice if you need more than 2 SATA (since PHY can't do it due to clock reference issue with NF3/4 chipset) then YES - pls do use a PCI card.
