Question Extremely Poor RAID0 Performance

Hello again Gang,

I was reading on 3dgameman that he has benched 2 WD 74GB Raptors in RAID0... his scores are way faster than mine, as you can see from the screen shot...

As I have the same setup with regards to Stripe Cluster size, why the hell is my system so much slower?

Is the Nvidia RAID just slower than Intel's solution ( ) or am I doing something wrong?

Anyone have any Ideas?

TIA,

WW

Hi Finetobe,

The page is here: http://www.3dgameman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34267

I also ran SiSoftSandra just as he did, and only got 79MB, as opposed to his 100+
MB...

do you have the os install on the raid 0? .
you have to be sure that you use the same vers of sisoftsandre .
i think that he has the os on a ata hd so there is no data on the raid 0.
there is an new bios for the motherbord . 25-11-04 BIOS is old

yes, the OS is on the RAID Array...

Would it make that much of a difference?

yes it do.
when you run the test .windows will still read/write from the disk at the same time.
there is pagefile /recovery and so on .
tray to make 2 partitions on the raid an run the test on both.

I don't run a pagefile, but when I used to, it was on my PATA drive, so as not slow down the Raptors...

Thanks for the info regarding the OS though... I didn't know it could have such a big impact on performance!

No, ET, I haven't tried a 16K Stripe... I was under the impression that 64K was the best, based on what I've read.

Is it possible to create the array using a 16K stripe without losing the install that's on the array at present?

I know from experience that Intel's ICH5R and ICH6R have the best performance with this stripe size - hope it may also apply to these NVidia RAID-MCP's.

So is it possible to resize the Stripe on my existing Array?

You would unfortunately have to create a new array

Ah Well, I was gonna remaster the machine soon anyway... Thanks for the advice ET, I'll give it a try when I do end up remastering it.

As always, your help is greatly appreciated!

I have found that there is close to zero difference in performance between 16k,32k and 64k stripes. It depends on what file sizes you are most commonly moving/manipulating.
