8RDA+ northbridge cooler

Hello guys , I got a 8rda+ board , and i noticed the northbridge gets VERY hot ,
whats a good cooler for this ???

Try this instead. It's a Thermalright NB1-C, right?

Yur gonna want to knock down the shoulders\corners on the chipset, lap it to about 800 grit, and clean it well of course.

I used a Zalman NB47J on my 8RDA+ NB for a couple years, without any problems.(but I have a 120mm fan stirring the air inside my case) Nothings quieter than passive cooling. Never lapped a chipset flat, thats what Ceramique is good for.

Honestly there is no point lapping a modern thermalright or Switech block CPU/NB/WC or any other I have seen, they are usually mirrorlike already.

He was talking about lapping the NB. Most are somewhat concave. but unless you plan on running high Vdd, then it's best left as it is. (use Ceramique instead)

Blue orb works for me attached with double sided tape to Epox's
passive cooler.

The blue passive Zalman has been working fine for me (up to FSB230 with 2x512MB dual channel), so I assume it is a sufficient cooling for nF2 NB. Apart from that, as already mentioned, it's completely noiseless.

Btw. the nF2 temps are indeed high, but mark it's either 0.21 or 0.23 micron technology, so it simply must get hot.

The NB temp on my 8RDA+ never seemed to actually be a factor in anything at all.

However, my 8RGA+ required both extra VDD and cooling for 200mhz with onboard video. I removed the stock cooler, applied Ceramique (amazing coincidence), and attached a 40mm fan to the cooler with some epoxy and nuts:

The 40mm fan came out of an old HDD cooler, and was nice and quiet.

EDIT: and yes, this is about the same as DougUK's solution

I think with a watercooled setup, you want an active NB cooler, just to get some air moving towards the board, but I wouldn't waste your money on the Swifty, it just seems like overkill.

What I can tell you is that you can get ahold of the stock 8RDA3/6+ Pro cooler from sales@epox.com for $5 + shipping, and it seems pretty beefy to me:

I've got two spare active coolers at home (stock Epox ones) - don't use them, since I hate the noise made by their fans.

hey -- I'm cheap -- I wanna push it, but I don't wanna break it -- it's mine!

in case it matters, you can't hear the Thermalright -- it's too small, and damn well balanced.

I just use it because this is my NF2 IGP mATX; bid to run at 166 but I'm up over 210 with VDD at 1.8V. The 1800XP thinks it's a 3500, on ALX-800 SF2 fan air cooling and ceramique.

Haven't fit it into the desk yet, on the MCW-6000 set up.
