If he's doing that, wouldn't XP bork with a hardware configuration error in the form of a classic BSOD?

Xtreme, if you were presented with the 'use last good configuration' option.. did you see if you can boot into safe-mode?

I don't know but I'm getting pretty good at it. My latest trick is to copy c:\windows\repair\system to c:\windows\system32\config\system after a repair installation fails to get rid of the nasty drivers. Worked on the latest two upgrades, NF2 MCP -> MCP-S and KT333 -> NF2 upgrade. Of course there's also a lot of driver cleaning, "set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1", etc.

I spend a lot of time being lazy

And apparently that really only worked in an isolated incident since I'm now working on a third machine and it isn't. Still, I am making some progress by using BartPE with the RunScanner plugin to fiddle with the SYSTEM hive, I'm just not exactly sure what it is I am doing that is working.
