I think we're heading to a situation where there will be fewer manufacturers producing products for enthusiasts, with just a few big companies taking the lion's share of the market.

It happens. The same has happened in the car manufacturing industry. The big names buyout the smaller companies, or put them out of business.

It is a sad state to see one of the old greats go but it has been a long time coming, as just a quick browse of this section of the forum and you'll find several threads asking about new boards and none ever showed up.
If you have nothing new to sell then you're pretty doomed.
It seems epox made a move into the graphics card biz and then fizzled out after that, a company near me a few years ago (modular techonolgy i think they were called) used to make tv tuners and modems (big oem supplier) they branched out into graphics chips and were then brought out several times and eventually folded.

Abit were indeed in deep trouble not so long ago but have been brought out and are back just about as Abit Universal.

Asus and Giga merger i believe is just rumours though giga have been struggling as abit of a bland brand i remember the days when if you wanted a solid depandable board you got a gigabyte.



Edit - It seems modtech are still living just (maybe) http://www.project9.com/modtech/ they're from my home town i used to know people who worked there and there tv tuners were great i think i still have an mm210 somewhere!
As for the old L'inq writer, i think he left and became part of fudzilla just like the L'inq lot originally split from the register (i think)

Hi Keith,

Asus and Giga merger that started has now dissolved, with all Gigbyte United projects canned.

Asus has to focus on Hon Hai (Foxconn) - they like us have a LCD panel plant - theirs called Innolux.

As for Gigabyte's products - they do now shine for sure with their DQ3 and DQ6 variants of 965 - hope their P35 offerings are as good.

Perhaps for other tier ones, releasing NVidia ODM 680i designs is laughable - just because they can't make overclocking pcb's or BIOS themselves. I won't name them but they are one of the big 4, and not ASUS or Gigabyte.

I've seen a lot of people I know move jobs in the last year or two - in the hardware industry or in the media.

Few people have moved away from IT completely - a guy who used to work for an NVidia partner now works in TV.

Guy who used to work for NVidia partner and then ATi partner now works in an etailer where prospects are better.

Guy from ATi now moved to online gaming company - that's serious cash

Seems etail and distribution are the places to be in the industry for job security, definatley not system integration. Distribution seems to be full of people who don't realise how far down the ladder or clueless they are though!!!

I'm happy enough where I am co-designing products that are the bi-product of our 5G panel production and monitor assembly. Travel less now, but seem to work harder!! I can rest assured I see my product on UK domestic TV every day now - something I couldn't before.

The last great deal I did for mainboards in my life was for gambling machines that needed dual VGA output - in stepped the 8RGMI, and it got rebuilt for one last time - thats an idea of what you have to do for mainboard manufacturing. Memory strap lovers need not apply.

Looks like the SUPoX rumors are true; at least there is a website for SUPoX. Check the support email address on that page, enfae@epox.cn.

I hope they can get things going again and they start selling some product. They have some motherboard choices for both AMD and Intel at least listed on the site.
