Unhappy Help wont go past 2.4GHz

Hi,

My rig:

Epox 4sda+ (running bios 2626)
p4 1.8a @ 2.4Ghz temps 38c - approx 50c
Thermaltake Volcano 7+
crucial 2100
maxtor 40Gb HD
GF4 Ti4600
noisy fans

I am having probs getting above 2.4GHz. Just will not post.

I have had the system running at 2.2Ghz (122fsb) with no probs, with mem running at approx 305MHz. I want to get the CPU up to 2.7 (fsb 150, mem 300) but am having no joy .

Currently the CPU voltage is 1.65v which seems nice and stable. I believe I should be able to get 2.7 without having to do the voltage mod.

Has ne1 else gotten theirs higher, if so how?????

thanks in advance

tanktop

Using the overvolt jumpers of the mainboard will allow you to exceed your voltage at present.

thanks for the repy, but should i really need to go above 1.85v to achieve 2.7GHz?

Cheers

Somedays some chips will, some days some chips won't !!! That's unfortunatley the nature of the beast that is overclocking.

How is the stability at 2.4 ?

Voltage and cooling are the biggies.

other than that is your PSU upto the job ?

k will try to up the voltage a bit more, but a bit nervous of doing so with only air cooling.

@2.4GHz seems rock stable. My PC is on 24*7 always running something. Have run seti, sandra, 3dmark 2001se with no probs.

seems a lot more stable since 2662 bios. The only problem I have had with this bios is that the insert key no longer defaults the bios settings, which is no biggy neway.

As for the PSU, good point will check. Have never had a problem with it b4 though and have used it in a number of systems.

thanks for assistance, i will let you know how i get on.

cheers

Don't push the voltage too far... lots of P4's die or lose steam if you do. The safe limit is somewhere between 1.65 and 1.7

I really think it's the memory. Try increasing the memory voltage if the board allows it... crucial loves voltage!

have had mem running at 305 b4 with no probs (fsb 122 4/5 mem = 305) so I do not see why this should be a prob now.

Seems to be more likely to be the core voltage though. Will try it at 1.9v and see what happens.

I have not heard of that b4, will look into. I knwo lots of peeps who run theirs at 1.95+ but they using water cooling or a fridge or summin.

neway will see how it goes 2nite and post back results.

tanktop
suppose i should put a sig in here....

"SNDS" sounds an aweful lot like issues relating to silicon thermal expansion and contraction. The P4 is a large area CPU, this means more expansion and contraction, but the nature of different types and grades of silicon plays a bigger role.

In reference to thermal expansion, I genuanly believe AMD's "T-die" technology is an asset to them.

SNDS, is that any voltage above 1.7 and cpu temp of -30c??? or any voltage above 1.7 and any temp over 30c???

Well I managed to get into XP with voltage at 1.95v. It all seemed ok until I ran 3dmark 2001. After Drogothic 3dmark crashed and XP crashed with a hardware problem.

Prob due to AGP running out of spec   raising voltage to agp or mem did not help. looks like i'm stuck at 2.4GHz or 2.52GHz at the mo unless I purchase an i845 chipset mobo.

If ne1 has more ideas will be happy to try.

Also tried to hit 2.998GHz (166fsb) but would not post. Looks like it would need more than 2.025v to hit that.

cheers for help

k think will leave at 2.4GHz for now. Am happy with 600MHz increase for that chip neway

Seeing as the 2.4GHz is only £150 now might get that and go for 3.

Thanks for your help and comments
