Who would want unfinished software anyway? its all buggy and crappy, and viewing it in its unfinished state just will ruin the final version.

Well incase you didn't I had a leaked copy of UT2k3. (and yes I bought the game when it was released fair and square!!) Yes it was a little choppy but not as buggy as the version that I bought!!

In general It's illegal to posses ANY Software not obtained in the normal manner or without the permission of it's creators/distributors.

It is.
Evidently ID sent the alpha copy of the game to some hardware review site and that person signed an NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) when he got the game. So it is illegal to leak that out.

no sane person will want to play a completely bugged version over the final version anyway.

besides, if they managed to get their hands on a leaked version, its most likely that they could just as easily get the full version when ID finally launch the end product.

and if ID knew it was going to get leaked, maybe it could have been a PR stunt?

From what I understand the RETAIL version will NOT work on some peoples machines (just ask dan)

But if I was them I'd much rather play something else rather than a very early, leaked, bugged, severely flawed version of the game.

I remember playing an alpha (or something similar) of Quake. I just went back to playing Duke3D

This thing spread fast lol. Great publicity for Id.. they didn't have to pay for bandwidth or anything.. ID "leaked" this.. it's just the 0.02 Alpha build that we all saw at E3 and QuakeCon 2k2. It's just 3 cut down levels and the E3 .demo file.

Id always has a free demo for download of all their games, this is like some sort of pre pre demo.
