I was a joystick fan too until a friend of mine showed me how he set his up. I now use the same method. (I'm giving my secrets away here) I use the arrow keys to go forward and backwards, lft ctrl to strafe left, 0 on the num pad to strafe right and the mouse(MS optical) buttons to jump, croutch and change guns..and if you don't have a good mouse, I use shift to jump(right above left strafe).hope that made sense. it works for both left and right handed people.

Would a gamepad solve the problem? My game pad uses exactly the same interface as a joystick, hence I have serious doubts to the feasiblilty of it in this case.

Normally I could program my Joystick to emulate my key board, but Saitek's program software won't be out for W2K until second quarter.

But To answer your question, I really don't know. These are the first two game I EVER saw that don't have in game Joystick assignments! Any one?

i don't remember if red faction had joystick support, but I don't think it did. it's the new "trend". maybe they'll come out with a patch for it someday if enough people complain.

Given the Billion dollar industry in Joy sticks and game pads and the total or near total expectation of compatibility I think the SOBs should have at lest put it on the box that there would be no joy or pad function.

I've spent two years learning to make the most of my Joystick! I consider this a major rip-off of the gamers trust and a real breach of game standards.

Ohhhh I hate it when this happens!!

BTW Many thanks mrpcman, maybe when I stop jumping up and down and screaming i'll try your system.... but that could take weeks":O}

Anyone else who can say for sure a game pad will work? Which one is best?

I don't think a game pad would work because it is the same function as a joystick..I can see playing with a joystick(ah, dukenukem 3d), but how do you play witha pad?

My same response to playing with a joystick. I'm a big fan of the keyboard/mouse combo for FPSes. SO many more buttons to use on a keyboard than on any joystick I've seen. But that's just me. We all have something we're comfortable with.
