To get half life 2 for free you need an ati bundled voucher for it, else like everybody else you have to pay. There is no harm in getting a new steam account if you havent got anything purchased on it allready.
Your login name will be your old e-mail addy, it might be worth contacting support if you do have online only supported games on it, if not just start again

From the benchies the 9800xt seems perfectly adequate so i wont be changing that at all

Wink

...somebody there said on page 9

"I really don't think Gabe really posted this. I think his account was hacked. The ip that he used to post was an open proxy for crying out loud!"

...another said

" LOL! i will laugh so hard when gabe comes on tommorow and tells us he was hacked again. "

...and another..

" I've just noticed a odd thing, Amazon.co.uk have had HL2 as a release date of Sept 1, 2004 for over a year now, but today (of all days) they've changed to Nov 1, 2004 wtf???"

Well, don't be so happy Cadaveca, one of the guys in the forum was sick *bad cold* and when he saw the announce in this forum he was all over his house jumping up and down ...that's funny only if Gabe was the guy that made the announcement!!!

Cheers

i actually saw an interview of GAbe talking about the release...from last week...he was talking about the preload and going gold.

going gold(in the HL2 world) is just having 500000 copies PRINTED!..that means that there are enough units to ship for opening day.

going gold mean i'll get my SDK...you guys may not be playing, but i sure as hell will be. the crappy part is i have to fly to cali to get it.

that posting WAS gabe's account. dunno..it is possible that it got hacked, but whateva...he would have already let admin know about it...and there would have been news already...all of gabe's post have been short and simple there...but HE IS A MEMBER OF THAT FORUM....he really really wants to get peoples reaction to the game...and especially the characters....seems he expects us to develop relationships with the AI......
regardless of the situation, i have hl2 preloaded with abt 2 gb, whilst most people seem to only have about 1.3....but over the next week or so , expect a preload every 4 or 5 days...there should be a total of 4 preloads...

OK. Here's to put an end to the joy. Sorry; I thought it was real at first too.

(taken from halflife2.net)
This morning it was confirmed that the post made concerning Half-Life 2 going gold, orginally thought to be made by Valve's Gabe Newell, was in fact posted by someone that had found his password and used it to post with his account. A Valve employee confirmed it in this thread on the SteamPowered forums.

I go to France for one week and come back to find all this!

I don't have time for HL2 now. Too much work before Uni.

" if that is what you mean then i'm outa luck there too.
I have no box, no slips.... the game im getting the cd-key off of is "blue shift"
the game is a few years old. If I did have any proof besides the disk itself, its all long gone."

blue shift keys are legit multiplayer keys ..AFIAK

we are using a few non GOTD keys (blue shift,CS, opp force) here at the lab and they play DoD just fine.... in CAL/TPG matches as well

lol...hehe..i just wanted to spread the hysteria....if you've seen the video interviews, you know that halflife2 IS done...but not ready for release.
the levels are designed and done. The graphics and physics engines are done. Heck, the multiplayer is done....However, the testing is not. Most of it is gameplay issues...like what happens when you stand here.....but were supposed to be there....becasue a certain character needs what-have-you...and things like what happens when you get shot.....
the games was developed with a team on each level, following a script. Each had a base graphics/physics engine....
they built their levels....and they were played as is...and then tweaked....and changed...and tweaked some more.....
this led to differing things on each level...like effects and such....(think gravity and what have you)....
now here's the kicker...
Halflife was not just a game....it was an experience.....
people have favorite characters....
no other game has been modded or emulated quite as much...
HalfLife has become a phenomena..........
So how do you go about making something better? sure graphics and such....but how do you make it more immersive?
This is what they may be left doing....and stuck trying to achieve perfection.
Boxes have been printed already....to the point that valve will have to buy them back should they not get sold.
Who financed this game?
Valve did....both as a company, and each person as an individual....
There is no contract saying said game has to be produced this date.....there is no actual date for release and there never will be. One day we will get up, and it will be all over the news. "Long Anticipated HalfLife2 Goes On Sale!"......and everyone will be rushing to their machines to play....
As far as i can tell, a signal will get sent to steam users ...and the game will unpack it self and open for play at the same time stores open in each respective time zone....(this is all speculation of course).....Gabe said it himself.....he wants EVERYONE HUMANLY POSSIBLE TO BE SITTING IN FRONT OF THEIR PC'S PLAYING THIS GAME.....A WORLDWIDE EVENT......and he has said that halflife2 activation still has to be done through steam even if you have a cd......

Anyway...everything is all rumor.....might see it next year. I'm betting on sept 21st....

probably more about trying to cash in on the hl1 engine some more, cs-cz has came out and a platinium pack including all the old mods ect

hl1 had to be the most ripped off game in exsistance, all you had to do was rip off hl1 and install any modd you fancied before steam arived. It makes sence in the end, theres not much competion around and we'd w8 whatever for a pop at hl2

its a posibility anyway

The option to pre-load HL2 has appeared on my list of games within Steam. It only appeared a few days ago. So, I guess I could download it and pay for it online.

At the time being, all you can do is pre-load. Eventually they'll open up the option for you to buy it from them but until that time you'll just have to be content with the pre-load. Personally I'd rather go to the store and buy the physical disc, manual, box, etc. I value not only the game but the art and such. Since the steam and retail versons are the same price, I don't see any reason to buy it through them. Obviously other people must think differently, though.

I was scouting around earlier on valves site for a dept where i could purchase a key from, and all i found was there online shop which seems to deal only in boxed versions.
