Help: BF2 tweaking!

I'm having some problems running BF2 on my main rig, and even if it isn't creme de la creme, it should be fast enough to run it in a decent resolution.

Currently I can only play it in 800x600@70, everything set to low, and with dynamic shadowing and AA set to off. This gives me a smooth gameplay, but if I try upping some settings it severely lags.

What could cause this? I would indeed like to run it in at least 1024*768 with medium settings.

The rig consists of:
S754 A64 3400+
1 GB OCZ PC3200 CL2 RAM
Aopen 6600 GT with 128 MB RAM - using TweaksRUs Modified 77.62
Win XP Pro

I'm overclocking the CPU and video card a bit, but it doesn't really help much. Besides, it should be able to run it even without overclocking, shouldn't I?

The rig is newly formatted, and AFAIK uses the latest drivers for just about everything.

i run on high..a;most same set-up, but x850xt. that would make me think your card is just a bit lacking for this game. With shader-heavy games such as BF2, onboard vidram makesa difference. try setting agp aperature higher...might help, might not.

my mate has got a 6600gt with an athlon xp3000 and 1024mb ram and runs on 1024x768 all on medium with no problems, try a dx9.0c reinstall.

On system in sig I can run it at 1024x768 on medium, 2xAA but i cant set many options on high before it all lags out, probably not enough video memory

Can you take a 3Dmark05 score and an Aquamark score so we can see how its performing in various areas?

I'll do that when I get home from work, dsio. Would you agree with me that with my current system, I should be able to run in better than 800x600 @ LOW?

1024x768 should be very easy, 1280x960 very good too. 800x600 is a problem.

I've been trying out the settings one by one. I've got a 6600gt made by Inno3d on agp. I'm at custom settings... looking for the best compromise. So far, when I up the texture to high, I get all the hiccups and lags in various places and occurences in the game (like when something blows up).

Yes, I do believe that GPU bandwidth is a great factor for this game.

Now come to mention it I had similar problems for a bit, running the f@h client was causing the game to die, and having my spyware software running caused it as well, turned them off and all was ok

They seriously do need to revise the folding at home clients. Folding badly effects NFSU, NFSU2, Jedi Knight 3, and BF2. The console version doesnt I think, but its something that needs fixing.

I found out to my horror that my 3Dmark05 score is down to 2200 for some reason? With the same card, and the barton CPU I reached ~3700!

Perhaps I should try re-installing the graphics drivers?

Mate can you hold off that for 20 minutes? Just give me a bit of time before you do some driver changing.

Ah, I didn't see your post there m8. I went ahead and removed the drivers (with driver cleaner) and installed them again. It gave me a boost of another 400 3Dmarks, but there is still some way to go. I'll hold off a while this time to give you a chance

Current 3Dmark05: 2604

For reference, here are the aquamark scores:
Before: 41551, GFX: 5847, CPU: 7177
After: 47403, GFX: 6879, CPU: 7621

I now suspect the motherboard drivers, but I don't really have anything to support that.

Mate can you give me 3Dmark05 compare URLs? Then I can track down where the bottleneck is. Also give the 80.40s a go, they are good

Just lets check your in driver settings. You may need to download NVTweak (google it, its 1MB) to enable all the settings.

Go to global driver settings, and change it from basic settings to advanced settings.

Set this:

Antialiasing: App controlled
Anisotropic: App controlled
Image Settings: High Performance
Vert Sync: Off
Force Mipmaps: None
Conformant Tex clamp: Off
EXT limit: Off
Hardware Acceleration: Single display (are you running dual display?)
Trilinear optimise: On
Aniso Mip optimise: Off
Aniso Sample optimise: On
Negative LOD bias: clamp
