Cool old skool racing

What racing games would you say were the great games prior to Gran Turismo? Pole Position and Bump N' Jump are pretty legendary. What other old favorites do you enjoy using emulation?

Revs was the first racing game I came in contact with - played on a BBC B Micro with an analog joystick!

I found an image of Revs on the net (from http://www.btinternet.com/~lawrence....bccomp/bbc.htm ), so I've attached it. It's not my copyright!

Along the lines of the top down racing games like Sprint & Gran Trak 10. Some of the earliest racing video games/simulators ever.

Roadrash was my favorite, then roadrash3...I remember wasting all my money on pole position in high school...."Nice driving! You qualified for lowest!" I still say that to people on the road today, LOL.

I used to avoid Donkey Kong and go straight to Rally-X, that was a fun game.

Whoa! That brings back memories. I can remember the noise it made when you spun off the track, there was the tyres screeching noise, and then a metal wall suddenly appeared, with a CRUNCH! sound!

What about Formula 1 for Spectrum ZX? You wouldn't drive a car you would manage the team and the car entrance to the pit and assist the entire race from your seat calling your car to the pits for changing tyres and so on...Boy didn't I spent hours and days playing that game....

I was watching an old movie the other day and there was a scene at an amusement arcade and it had like one or two video game cabinets (Atari's Computer Space I think), all the rest were electromechanical games like Sega Sand Buggy, and mostly pinball machines. Yeah, pinball used to seriously rule until the late 70s.
