Starforce reboots your PC?

CDFreaks and Geek.com both have published an interesting article about a new DRM package from Starforce that will reboot your PC if it see something it doesn't like. The source of this information is being attributed to Futuremark.

According to Nicklas Renqvist at Futuremark, they are wrong.

I have not been able to discover the source of the "This latest identified threat by Futuremark is one that relates to a driver being installed on your computer that gains RING0 access" statement, but I can say that I haven't been able to find it on Futuremark's web site or in their forum. There has, however, been considerable discussion about Starforce in this thread in Futuremark's forum.

So, how about it? Any problems with Starforce DRM? Is this a tempest in a teapot, or is there a real issue here? Tell us!

Dunno, I never install it.

But enough people have had serious issues with it.

Star Force installs itself and gives itself ring 0 access through ring 3 (User level). Unlike a regular driver that does that to steer a single device, SF can "steer" multiple devices. It is only a matter of time for anyone to abuse this as this grants any code ring 0 access through SF. It's like bombing your OS back to the Win98 stone age.
I'm waiting for the first virus like program to use SF. With this kind of discussion about SF it is only a matter of time.

Ring 0 = kernel and device drivers. As SF is hooking various IO calls, it can only be implemented in Ring 0.

Some device drivers (giveIO for example) allow access to just about anything. Drivers like the USB HID driver are designed to handle multiple devices too. That, and certain device drivers are well known to be vulnerable. It's just not been massively exploited yet.

Update : Ubisoft is being sued for using StarForce to a value of $5 Million.

Linky

Looks like it might be the beginning of the end for StarForce!
