I like the idea of electronically distributed console games, and considering how much harder it is to copy a console's data than say, mp3s off a computer, it should greatly decrease piracy. Obviously it won't stop it, but it's a start.

Might be great! But one more chance for them to screw up as well!

Nintendo's Wii is supposed to be similar to that feature with it's ability to download all of the Super Nintendo roms. Not like people couldn't do that already....

Thing is a ROM is likely to be a few megabytes at most, but a PS3 game is going to be several gigabytes.

With the electronic distribution it also means that developers can get away with releasing buggy games, and then releasing patches later on.

My guess is that you may buy a game which has the bulk of the media and programs on a disk, but the game will not work until you go online, register it, download some more content, patches, etc.

Would be a bit unreasonable to expect people to have to download the entire (e.g.) 10GB worth of data!

Also, different games from a vendor are likey to share resources - much like Source from Valve. So, once you have the engine on disk, any subsequent games only require a minimal download.

The PS3 is quite expensive and is targetted at consumers who are likely to have or are able to have Internet. For someone who just hasn't got round to it, they soon will if they're a PS fan boy.

To put it bluntly, if you don't have internet Sony are not interested in you.

I think all of the most played games right now require a net connection anyhow, e.g. Source games, World of Warcraft. Has not held these games back.
