Death to Battlefield!

Er, wouldn't their servers record the IP address when it goes to pick up an advert, just the same way that all web sites record the IP address when you visit them?

Edit: It's not EA that's storing the information, it's IGA. Thus expect any games that use IGA's libraries to behave the same way. That will probably include games from THQ, Codemasters and Atari...

The in-game ads wouldn't really bother me.

But, for pete's sake! Spyware? Damnit.

Won't anti-spyware software pick it up and block it and stuff?

I am suspecting that there is no spyware at all. The up-front notice (note that it's not hidden in the EULA that no-one reads) pretty much tells you there's no "spyware" per se, as the advertising is only in place when the game is running.

Personally, I consider the CGW radio comment rather poor.

I'm not convinced THQ or Atari would.
Good in game advertising could be used for racing games, where track advertising is the norm. That wouldn't bother me.
But say your running around singleplayer in Halo 3 and suddenly an advert pops up advertising Lynx?

I *don't* think other developers will be quite so "nasty" to consumers with this as EA.

Battlefield 2142 also tracks "impression data" related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers qualify the reach of a given advertisement.
If people have a problem with this, then they shouldn't surf websites with adverts on them. Why? Websites already track this information, some including duration of advertisement shown onscreen. How is this nasty? Personally, I feel this is a certain podcast almost deliberately misleading people.

I do not see how this could be considered "spyware". There's nothing tracking what do on your computer, what sites you browse, nothing trying to intercept keypresses. In fact, there's nothing there that you can't do on a website with cookies and JavaScript.

No, it's only active while playing BF2142. It'll install regardless of if you are conencted or not.

I like the way they say "might be"! There again a french person might get ads in Chinese.

In the same way, you might be able to get their games working.

Forum!!! SPYWARE!!! OMGZOR! RUN!!!!!

I still don't want the game. I would really laugh my socks off if anti-spyware tools detected it and blocked it. Maybe we can even hack it so it completely removes it!

But seriously, what next: EA Launch Anitspyware tool!

Then after that: EA-ntiSpyware kills own publisher's games!

ahhh, predicting the future is so unpredictable....

Yeah, in the same way that if you're a German user on AOA, you might get ads in German. I'm with cadaveca on this one.

People appear to be very two faced about this. They aren't bothered that Google tracks adclicks on the Adsense program, coupled with the fact that logging into Google (such as Gmail) means that Google can track which adverts you click on and identify you personally. On the other hand, they complain about EA's upfrontness and claim spyware.

Exclamation

1. EA Games does nothing more than Steam.
2. If you are afraid to use their games then don't use them.
3. Sending over some info with your approval is not Spyware !

Get over it guys

Ok I think this discussion has worn thin. Let's try and make sure we're not attacking other members....everyone is entitled to their view.

Having just played the NBA'07 demo on my x360 i noticed there was adverts with the auto replays, much like you get in ausie v8 racing i had a 'cheverlot replay or somthing' very tacky!

The only way i'd really approve of having dynamic adds in a game is if they were a) authentic, b) lowered the cost of the game. £50 an xbox360 game is just madness.

Oh and im fairly sure xbox's tell billy gates a load of stuff everytime you connect to xbox live

I don't want ads in my games unless it subsides the price of the game. End of.

I guess the extra revenue from ads will offset loss of custom from EA.

GG.

Given the cost of production of games has been going up significantly for the last 20 years or so, it might well be subsiding the price of the game. David Doak claimed (in 2004) that the development budgets for an A-list title is around $5 million, and expecting development costs to hit $10-$15 million for Xbox 360/PS3 generation[1]. David MacQueen and Rick Gibson believe that only by outsourcing development to Eastern Europe and South Asia will be be possible to stop the production costs increasing by 50%[2]. Valve realised that the $60million budget and five year period they'd need to make Half-Life 3 was unlikely to be achievable, hence the move to episodic production to reduce development costs[3].

1. Game publishers sweat console change
2. Outsourcing in Next Generation Games Development: Delivering cost and production efficiency
3. A 'Survivor' for gaming?
