Battlefield 1942 crashing

Yeah I know its old, but still very fun.

I installed Battlefield 1942 with patch and mods.
For some reason when it gets to the menu screen for profiles, launching games, options, all that....
it freezes up.
There is this short buzz sound and frozen.
I'm going to keep searching on the internet, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced this problem before.
This is on my brother-in-laws computer.
He said that if he quickly goes straight to the instant battle with all default settings, a level will load and play, but only when he tries to go to the menus it will lock up.
Note: all other games seem to work fine (doom3, dark messiah demo, prey demo)

If you want to be sure it isn't patch related make the installation and run it just as it is. Then see which patch does the bad things!

Try the latest drivers for the graphics card and make sure no other programs are running in the background.

I had allready tried it without the patch installed and the same lock-up happend.
I also had my brother-in-law disable the on board sound to see if that was the problem, but it still locked up.
So I am having him try a new driver from Geocubes website.
Also, he told me that it does lock-up when playing other games but only after playing a while.
He said last night they installed Battlefield 2 and it works, but I don't want to get into that cup-of-joe....
