COD2 problems.. sometimes runs great.. sometimes runs crappy.

Randomly sometimes i load up the game and it RUNS GREAT with high FPS. and then most of the time the game runs AWFUL! (iam thinking its a driver issue with graphics card or something)

i have the most up-todate drivers for my Video card and Chipset from Nvidia.
Iam using:
1. Nforce Ultra 400 Chipset

2. with a Athlon 2800 Barton processor PRIME STABLED at 2.4Ghz so its running 3550 ish performance according to Sandra benchmarking. or almost FX-53 performance rather.

3. gig of ram. 2-2-2-11 timings its PC-2700 but theres massive volts. and its been prime stabled.

and the Video Card is Nvidia 7800 GS OC. so its stock at 400/1250 (capible of being OCed much higher but it doesn't make to much of a difference.. only a few FPS difference and the game is unplayable still.... so i uninstalled it and reinstalled with a fresh driver from Nvidia)

Its so weird.. i was giving faith in COD2 untill i turned it on today just for some laughs to see how bad it the FPS is... (usualy under 10's) but today it was cranking HUGE stages at 30+ FPS (for me i never seen COD2 on my rig doing so well)... and the game was complelely smooth with Optimal video settings (which is set almost at max as default, but even when i turn down the details.. it still runs crappy...) I basicaly played for about.... 4 hours.. i was so happy and thought that it was normal again.... And then after exited the game to grab something to eat and returned... the game was back to its normal self with under 10 FPS usualy.. and the game was back to being unplayable....

I hope someone can fix this for me... its ONLY this game that is causing me problems. i play Source at full graphics all the time and the FPS is great.... but this thing is really giving me trubbles.. at first i thought it was just my hardware was too slow.. but on occasion the Graphics will be back to normal and the FPS would be REALLY great for the time i leave the game opened with out exiting it. so... it looks like my rig is fully capible of handling it.. iam hoping its just a driver problem.. but i completely uninstall the drivers and reinstalled it several times.. and still no go....

Whilst Sandra may show your CPU performance as being FX-53 like it isn't the Athlon 64 series of CPU are much better for gaming than their XP friends.

What speed are you running your memory at? those timings are good but what is the DDR speed?

sorry, i thought i added that. 12Multi, and 200FSB. sometimes i change the multi around and switch the FSB to around 218 or whatever with slack timings.. but for the most part. i keep it at 12x200 with tight timings.

last time call of duty ran REALLY well was when i had it at 11.5x210 FSB.... and after i exited the game and turned it back on.. it was a no go...

EDIT!: COrrection its playng perfectly right now.. and its at 12multi and 200 FSB 2-2-2-11 timings. still need a fix though.. cuz its so inconsistant when its going to play well or not... most of the time IT DOES NOT PLAY WELL

have you tried changing the graphics from DX9 to DX7? I find with my 6800GS i get 60-125 fps w/ DX7. DX9 i'll never get above 40. Also with cod2 i've noticed that if you have a heavily or even lightly fragmented HDD it will slow down the game by a significant amount. So check out your HDD's and try DX7 and let us know.

My system is virtually the same as your except for the video card and PC3200 mem.

defraged it.. not a bit of improvement.. and i also turned back down to stock clockings.. nothing is happening. it still is acting up.

i have a new stable OC for the rig, so iam running it at 11.5 by 210 FSB now.

wholy crap! it fixed it! thanks man!

the Direct X from 9 to 7.. i wounder why the hell 9 doesn't work... but ya.. that did the trick man.. i couldn't thankyou enough.. i wish i did that first before defragging.. because i always feel that defragging currupts files.

no prob. You might want to try some of these commands in the game console to help improve your game play.

/snaps 40
/com_maxfps 125
/rate 25000
/com_hunkmegs 512
/cg_drawfps 1 (shows fps)
/cl_maxpackets 30
/r_gpusync 0

see.. it HAS ran it in direct x 9 before.. and it ran wounderfully with good FPS's...... but for some reason it only does it sometimes..... i really do think its a driver problem... because i have seen it run in dirext x 9 before with no problems.

i just fixed it for my Single Player, it now runs at Dirext X9 with nice snow everywhere PERFECTLY! BUT the multiplayer seems to can't handle the Dirext X9, capping the FPS only at 91 and when its game time the FPS is about... 7...

but when DIRECT X9 DOES WORK PROPERLY my FPS caps out at 500+ .. when it doesn't it stops right at 91.... i hate call of duty 2 now... and nvidia.. it has to have the worst drivers... KNOWN TO MAN

cod has a built in frame limiter, you can unlock it by typing /com_maxfps 0 in your console. To open the console push the "`" key (the one next to the "1" key.

doesn't seem to work.... i tried it and it still doesn't go up as high as it does when it loads up with perfect performance the occasional times.

Ok sinse i lasted posted.. i reinstalled windows and reinstalled the Dirext X drivers from Oct 2006 and then later updated it to the Dec 2006.. (not sure if it really updated.... or if the update did anything) So far it seems like its acting the same and occasional the game will loud up with perfect details and FPSs.... iam not sure whats the deal... i freaken reinstalled the whole windows and reinstalled the game with its patches and then reinstalled all the new Forceware software and Nvidia Chipset software....

I gave nvidia an email.. BFG an email and i also posted it a few other places... it seems that the best place thats helping me right now is this forum and the codboards.

FIXED IT! FINALLY! you guys won't beleive it.

it looks like the problem was the powersupply... iam using a 480w Thermaltake Xaser III which equals = the crap.

haha, i turn down some of the fans before game load up and it works perfectly! and then after the game loads up i can turn up the fans to max... i know you guys might not beleive me.. but hell i did serveral test.. and each time i want it to run crappy i turn on ALL THE VANTEC TORNADOS i have.....

But its not to bad. i use my fan controller and i turn all the vantec tornados on low speeds and turn 1 completely off and it ALWAYS turns on the game at full performance. Its so weird.. ya ya ya ya ya you guys probly won't beleive it... and i didn't really beleive it at first either... so it took me like 2 weeks to figure out and made me reinstall windows (when it didn't really need to be reinstalled) but now its complelty fixed and i can play COD2 and Oblivion on FULL GRAPHICS WITH KICK ASS FPS. thanks for everyone who attempted to help. i really appreciate it.

A 480W PSU is the problem here? That doesn't quite add up to me, I would blame your fan setup which seems extravagent to say the least....

The PSU could be a little flaky too.

Could be the controller drawing to many amps too.

haha whats wrong with my fan setup? i was hoping to get a really good OC out of it, which in my opinion i sorta accomplished it. but i had no idea my PSU wasn't going to be able to handle it.... the Thermalright SI-97A does one hell of a job cooling the processor.... sometmes i dont even need to turn the fans on... and the PC is fine. or i can just barely leave the fans running for the fan on the heatsink and the processor temp will still be in the 30's range..... i remember my Coolermaster heatsink was so bad. i would have the fan on max and still only be in the 50's C on the processor... thermalright is something else.... if i knew it was going to work so well i wouldn't have gottten so many beefy fans.
