How long before it's ported in D10 to XP/2000 Pro, any guesses? ":O}

Actually, I believe the "techincal" limitation of DX10 on XP and below was actually never incorperated.

Sorry dude, From the bit I read a while back, there NOTHING inherent about DX 10 that says it can't be made to run properly on XP, and probably on 2000 pro as well. I wish I could help you out with a link, but I stink at that stuff! ":O}

Can some one recall the thread where this was made known to us?

We cross posted Pitch. Can you say more? Is going to support XP in DX 10 out of the box?

Will be DX9 under XP, out of the box.

Possibly, MS will provide DX10 drivers for XP, if they want to. In the fullness of time.

I'd suspect the game will crawl using DX10 maxed out, unless you have some very funky hardware. Same as the original FarCry game did when it was launched.

Exclamation

- DirectX 9.0L was the early name designation for what is now called "DirectX 9.0Ex".

- DirectX 9.0Ex is a Windows Vista only feature. In a nutshell, it is DirectX 9.0c, with some modifications to work smoothly with the new driver characteristics of Windows Vista, which is significantly different at the graphics level than Windows XP.

- Windows XP cannot run DirectX 10 (technically, Direct3D 10) applications because of the significant changes in the graphics API and driver model)

- the Xbox 360 cannot run Direct3D 10 because it lacks the Shader Model 4.0 hardware.

So, if you’ve read this far and STILL want Windows XP to run DirectX 10, you know the only answer: You’ll need to upgrade to Windows Vista and install a Shader Model 4.0 graphics card!

Well after the amount of money I spent on hardware I would be pretty pissed to find it crawling in DX10

You may well be right on this Chris. But know this. There IS a group of people out there working on this, I followed a link to their site. "They" seem to think they could run at lest XP and probably 2000 pro in DX 10. As I said, it's in the forums somewhere...

I've also read the the inability to run DX 10 was a "Design" feature, so you poor souls who actually bought Vista wouldn't feel totally ripped off, which I think you were, Ap thinks you weren't...but AP has a investment in believing this, while I, am only slightly swayed in my beliefs by my unreasoning and eternal hatred of the blood monster from hell... you decide who has retained his objectivity and who has been devoured by MS PR! ":O}

(Many thanks to AP for his part in my post!)

Negative, the techincal limitation for preventing DX10 to run on XP was the desire to make the GPU RAM virtualisable. Eventually, this was dropped since it simply didn't work with nVidias GPU's who had no time or desire to alter the design.

No it is the XP API that allows access to the DX10 WDDM, if the hardware supports it.

Af far as I know SM4 isn't a requirement of DX10. In the same way as SM3 is NOT a requirement of DX9. Also much of the DirectX10 APi was ported over from the 360. This was always intentional to help multi platform titles.

Depends, Crysis apparently scales VERY well with CPU with full support for multithreads. Apparently, it's hardly playable under a single core system. I don't think it's as GPU dependent as people thing, especially with talk of it being played on a mutlicore Laptop running a 8700m at E3.

Meh.
It was an impulse buy. I saw Vista Ultimate going for about £100 ($200) on ebay and thought what the hell. Lets have a go.

I couldn't really care any less to evaluate my purchase any further. But suffice to say I enjoy using Vista.

Yeas I am aware of this and I know ATI found a nice "workaround" and MS $cr3w3d ATI and made this RAM-V optional. But there is more to it than just memory virtualisation.

"No it is the XP API that allows access to the DX10 WDDM, if the hardware supports it."

DirectX 9L aka 9EX (9 Extended or 9.1) is a minor update to DX9. It is not DX10. It was added to Vista to support certain features they wanted to enable Aero Glass. And they wanted Aero Glass to be able to run atop DX9 hardware, using Vista's support for "fallback" DX9 drivers, so that Vista's UI could run on hardware (and drivers) that was actually available prior to launch. So while it's entirely possible that MS is now going to release 9L for XP, and it's also possible for games to require 9L (though I don't know why they would) it does not follow that 9L is a renamed 10 or that DX10 will run on XP

The fact is that the techincal "limitations" for DX10 on XP are now completely "workaroundable". The problem with this is that MS is competing with it's own product, XP, so retains the Vista DX10 functionality. It's a selling point for vista, but with news that the only limiting factor is PR, I think MS will have to bend.. Vista sales are completely stagnant, and MS needs to back it's strongest product.
