I remember playing Quake 2 for hours on end. It was fun to play. Nothing special but it worked. The lighting was fantastic and the sound were just great. It was in no way realistic. Very square but it was a game and I knew it. It seems like realism is the new thing. But in trying to become more realistic, I think we are loosing the game. When you are playing through an alien planet it doesn't matter how real it looks. When playing in a jungle, I sometime think it would be better to be less realistic. It feels too fake to me to try to get so close and still not get there. I think that makes sense.

I remember playing Privateer 2: The Darkening. While compared to visuals now it was pretty bad, but it had actual actors and video footage. As for game play - I still compare it to space combat games as being what to aim for. Newer games like Darkstar 1 or even ones based on it like Freelancer didn't come close, IMHO only the X series came close, and bettered it. Spaceforce: Rogue Universe hasn't been played as yet, but it may be up there as well. For me its about the game play, less about the graphics.
