Sony rising: PS3 opens up lead on Xbox 360 in July

It's surprising how many Playstation 2 consoles are still being sold.

That would seem to point to not having COMPLETE backward compatibility in all PS3's, when it was totally possible, as a marketing tool for PS2 sales hey...?

Not sure, but not everyone has a HD TV, and the PS3 is not up to much on a standard TV.

They still release new games for the PS2.

It's good value for money as a DVD player and video game console.

Actually, the HARDWARE PS2 compatibility was removed from the PS3 as a cost-reduction measure. It was what made the first $400 PS3 even possible. From what I gather, you still have SOFTWARE compatibility (i.e. emulation) of the PS2.

I'm sure at least SOME of the continuing PS2 sales are being driven by people who want to still be able to play all of their old PS2 games, but I rather suspect that a big chunk of those sales are coming for the simple reason that the PS2 has a HUGE software library, is still a VERY capable machine, and costs like $100.
