Hi fellow PS3 ers!

Thought you should know that one year and 10 days after purchase ( ten days out of factory warranty) My PS3 Blue Ray failed to register with the system, doesn't recognize disks when inserted.

So I'm glad I paid $90.00 for a 5 year warranty from New Egg right? Well kinda...

Seems Sony doesn't have anyone to repair it within 50 miles of me or Seattle!!

I'm waiting (after 10 days of waiting) to receive a letter from the Warranty people that will out line my choices...

Basically they will replace my unit... or return my money minus the $90.00 for warranty. Either way my current Box is gone....

I'm looking at a PS3 160 gig at New egg that goes for the $500 I paid for mine with an 80 gig....So this may actually favour me in the long run ":O}

But seems an AWFUL waste, all that's wrong with it is that the machine lost touch with the Blue Ray drive. My cell is still folding, my music on my PS3 still plays quite well... I can put disks in the drive and tell it to eject and all is well... seems a shame...

From what I've seen around the net and here at AOA...If you but a PS3...BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY!! For as long as they will let you! $500.00 is a terrible thing to waste!!

Wasn't your 80 GB PS3 one of the first ones that had full PS2 hardware emulation? The new 160 GB PS3s do NOT have that capability.

Yeah, one of my carps! But really, for me, it's a fake carp. I don't have or play any of the old PS2 games....and it saves me from updating as Danrok recently had to do for added space.

If I was you, I'd try to hang on to your 80GB. That is, if they decide to repair it. The backward compatibility is really handy, even if you don't think so now. I don't have PS2 playback on my white 40GB, and I didn't notice how many great PS2 games there were until I bought the PS3! Strange, right?

It sucks that you have this problem though. I've not come across anyone who has had the Blu-Ray drive fail on them, but I guess the odd problem is expected.

Repair doesn't seem to be an option, replace or refund at this point...

Well.. if you get it replaced it might come with a better or even faster blue ray drive.

I remember the first gen of PS2's I think had slow cd rom drives and the newer ones had faster drive in it. Maybe you'll get lucky and have the same thing happen?!?!

Hi Ice...things kinda went south, their "letter" showed up yesterday, ...no choices, just a straight replacement with a new in box 80 gig. NO opportunity to renew my warranty, just a Sony one year on the new unit. I'm calling them and see if I can get cash back. PS3 owners...NEED THAT WARRANTY!!

I'm probably going to be stuck with this, but I'll call and make very sure of that before I sign their agreement...wish me luck! ":O}

I don't know, but looking from the outside on this I'd say that Sony programed the drive to fail just after the warranty expired.
Wouldn't be the first time a company has done this.

On other products I've purchased (all kinds of things) in the passed I've notice that no more than a few days after the warranty expired it died...

Ok how many PS3 do we have in our foums? I know two of them (Danrok's and mine) at lest that have had trouble.... are there more?

Letter came on the 24th, pretty much a take it or leave it offer to replace my unit with a new In the Box" unit. What a waste! If it didn't cost me my warranty I'd be willing to at lest look to see if it's just a soldered connection or whatever...

They wouldn't let me pull my old PS3 hard drive and replace the new one with it! Seems like they would FREAKING OWE me that much!

I have an Combo connection (Sata II, USB, Firewire x2 kinds ":O} external hard drive coming (when weather permits) is it possible to back up all my PS3 settings to it then reinstall them in the new PS3? TIA!

I have two. One is a UK 60GB and the other a japanese 40GB.

Both have been fine for me so far.

I've not had any problem with my PS3, but I've only had it about a month.

As for the drive, yes, you can simply copy data from the old drive to the new one, AIUI. I believe there is a backup utility under the system menu, though I've not messed with it.

This thread send chills down my spine. Got an 80 gig (black) some two months a go. So far so good. They offer me the extended warranty but I decline. Bought it for the Blue ray drive and the folding capabilities.

My PS3 has been going for almost 18 months without any issues. I upgraded the hard drive to 320GB samsung as soon as the warranty was up.

@Daniel. There is always the option of streaming your media to the PS3 so you don't have to keep everything in two different places and have a backup for both. I use mediatomb to stream files to my PS3.
