They seem to be targeting markets which Sony, MS, and Nintendo give a wide berth to.

My guess it that the market they are targeting would really rather have....Sony, MS, and Nintendo... Want, desires what others have...not a substitute....if they can sell this to those who have Sony, MS, and Nintendo, they have a chance, if not....I don't know who they think they are fooling...":O}

I think they intend this to be what the Tata Nano is to cars:

I see your point Dan. Yet it seems that a tool of real use, paired down to what I really need is a good thing. But a Game that is less compelling than other games is not all that much fun....and fun is what we want from games...If they are fun, everyone wins.":O}

I think this story has some relevance:
Onlive: new service could mean game over for PlayStation and Xbox - Times Online

Games run remotely on a server, meaning the console needs no powerful or expensive processors.

However, I think the idea sucks.

Someone still has to pay for it, the customer. So, you'd effectively be renting a console, rather than owning it out right.

The games I've already bought for my PS3, I can continue playing for years, without extra costs, or the need for internet. Also, I can sell them, give them away, etc.

I can do folding@home with my PS3.

Like most humans, I aspire to owning certain things. It's nice to have some amazing technology to hold in your hand. Technology is perhaps the modern equivalent to a sword, provides empowerment. Just like we still like to have books to hold and keep, rather than just digital words.

I agree also, even though I don't have a console, I can't imagine paying every month to stream games on to my TV and playing them with a small universal console. It sounds like a good idea...
How the heck are the going to stream the equal amount of data that goes to our monitors? Sounds like all the processing is at the server and then the video & controls stream back-n-forth.... Kinda like playing games over remote desktop. but we know that streaming information over remote desktop is too slow for games. the frame rate is way too low.
So how are they fixing that problem?
