| Pingtest.Net (Part of Speedtest.Net) tests not only your ping, but your line quality as well so you'll know if there's any problems with your signal or not for online gaming. Pretty cool really... ![]() I just tested mine & it says I have A line quality! (0 Jitter) Too bad I'm not much into online gaming anymore... ![]() To test your line signal go here... | It wasn't really simple, but it was easy enough using Firefox. I clicked Direct Link under the result, then paste the link it into the address bar, then loaded the page with the image, then rightclicked save image as, then uploaded the image to AOA. ![]() It's the only way that AOA allows for images like this to be put on the forum.

| The packet loss test is "interesting" - I tend to get a "we couldn't test this" 4 times out of 5. However, I am bouncing my connection through a box or two (no direct connection), which leaves my ping at 62ms, and the jitter at 42ms. No surprise there, as it's not direct to the Internet.

| Does speed generally create jitter or is this just my misconception?

| With a good connection, higher speed should result in less jitter. Jitter is basically just a measure of the change in signal delay, or delta, between one ping and the next. As an example, if one ping takes 62 mS to complete, and another ping takes 42 mS to complete, you have a 'jitter' of 20 mS. Obviously, there are whole host of things between you and the server that can affect jitter. Every router, proxy server, NIC, switch, and hub that the ping packet passes through between point A and point B introduces some delay and can potentially affect the jitter. Thing is, while there are litterally thousands of things that can cause jitter, and while the vast majority of those things have absolutely nothing to do with the phone line you are using, it also happens that MOST of the CAUSES of jitter show up on your phone line or ISP (poor line quality, over-loaded switching fabric, etc.).

| Thanks for explaining Jitter in easy to understand language Giz. I was under the misconception that it had to do with the signal strength fluctuating. ![]() Now I know it has to do with the differences between ping measurements. Learn something new everyday! ![]() I swear by CableNut Adjuster for tweaking my Internet settings. I've always got a good increase in speed as well as a reduction in online gaming ping using it! 70 ping is not to bad for a 1000 miles. I'm currently running 184% faster than my Host's average speeds... ![]() Works well with XP, Vista & W7...not sure about Linux though. Some get fantastic results from this while others don't really see any improvements at all. Luckily I'm one of those that do. I had one friend go from 6mbs to 10!

| Fluctuations in signal string can AFFECT jitter, but jitter is not itself a measure of the signal strength.
