GTA 3 is great, but lacks the multiplayer function. How about Mafia? Serious Sam 2 is ok, but only for a shorter period at a time, IMHO.

Its not exactly easy on the easy levels, especially in the first one with that big room where you get like 100+ of each enemy coming after you along with those annoying Werebulls(sp?)

Battlefield 1942 is a little involved, but it does have "instant action" functionality... and I really did the gameplay and graphics, much more fun than UT2K3 IMO.

For instant enjoyment or sheer thrills, serious sam will definitely suffice

serious sam for some instant action
or
for a £10 buy half life, then you can play that in single player, then head on teh intarweb and play some deathmatch on the hundreds of mods out for it (Day of defat, similiar to BF1942, Counter Strike, counter terrorism simulator (yeah right), Team Fortress Classic (squad based action). And much much more
all for a tenner, dont get much better value than that
