What Power Supply?

Hi,

I've been looking to buy a new PSU for awhile now and I have a few questions on what to buy

What would you people recommend for an overclocked athlon system with a lotta fans?

Any response would be great

Thanks

Antec True Power, 430 or better. Should be good for a barton 3000 a radeon 10000 and 4x10krpm RAID, so it won't break sweat on anything you can put on it at the minute, unless you're into peltiers.

that's suprising because normally my experiences with enermax's 5v line have been bad.

I've heard good and bad and have had good and bad experiences of all of the above. Seems that perhaps quality control might be better.

I should note that my experiences run over three or four years, so the current state of affairs may not really be reflected accurately by those experiences. That said my 400 Sparkle x2 are performing admirably at present.

Not exactly... Quite a few mobos stress the 5v line. Epox just happened to be the most popular target. My enermax 330w exhibited the same issues running an ECS board, and significantly impacted overclock attempts. (This was last year)

Yeah, I knew my Gigabyte had 5v line issues, that's why I avoided Sparkle and Enermax, and got an Antec.

It's working great now.

I think people complain of bad volts on Antecs within a week of getting them, they tend to "burn in" after a couple of days use.

If you insist on the best, and have the bucks to prove it look no further than PC Power&Cooling power supplies. I've been lusting after their Silencer 400 model lately. 1% tolerance on the 3.3v, 5v, and 12v rails. Drool.
www.pcpowercooling.com . Second best would be the SPI Sparkle's, IMHO.

Id allways recomend Sparkle 400watt unit based upon a fortron Source supply.
Mine has been flawless even under the extreme loads i put it under.
You can often tell real quality by weight, Sparkle 400 is a brick with no spare space inside.
I saw a Q-Tech brand 550watt the other week, it was not nice. it weighed literally half that of my sparkle performance was not supprisingly poor in comparison.

Most supplies based on fortron 400watt component will be top noch, this may be the same as the supplied steve mentioned.

Exactly what problems did people report using Sparkle's Spyder ?

I am partial to Antec's TruePower PSUs too, I have one TruePower 430W and it runs quiet and smooth, no voltage variation so far. Plus, it has the best price/performance ratio among the new and much hyped PSUs.
But if you want a monster PSU, get the Enhance ENS-0246 460W model. It is designed for multiple CPU platforms, so you can imagine what it can do for a single CPU system.
