It's On The Way!

My dual AMD system was just ordered!

Doing mod to a pair of XP1600's for it, hope to get at least 1600mhz from each, on a MSI K7D-Master. GFX is radeon 8500, 512 MB of crucial PC2100 capable of 170mhz @ most aggressive timings... so i think im gonna have a rather potent box here

You can mark me as....Officially Jealous.

Hope it gets there on wings and you get set up and running with minimal problems.

You could start pinching pennies now Paul, then you will be able to afford dual Opterons when the hardware hits the street. Just something to ponder. The quad channel memory such a configuration would offer would be something unreal to say the least.

Jeff, think Sledgehammer will herald the return of the 4 CPU motherboard? I remember lusting after them back in the Pentium 120 days!

Sledgehammer is designed to easily go to 8-way, though technically it could be used in a configuration of 128 or more with the right chipset design. Sledgehammer is designed from the ground up with SMP in mind, unlike Intel designs that are designed to be uniprocessors with SMP support bunged in. The only problem Sledgehammer may present in SMP configurations is the HyperTransport busses used to interconnect the CPUs lacks ECC, this could cause some problems when one CPU is accessing memory on another CPU's memory controllers, but despite this it is considered to be a good design. 4 way boards will definitely make a come back, but like before they will be extremely expensive and they will be non-ATX super beastly custom PCBs requiring special chassis.

From an SMP perspective, I find the thought of a dual core hammer to be most appealing. The hammer design already has the ability to support a L3 cache built in to the design despite the current lack of L3 cache(hammer design can support no more than 1MB of L2 cache, AMD engineer L3 cache support in for future use). It would be quite possible for AMD to use two cores each with 32k L1 instruction and 32k L1 data and 256k L2 caches, and then throw on hefty 2MB shared L3 cache(or a lot more if the L3 cache is not full speed and of an SDRAM type rather than an SRAM type). This would make one fine CPU for workstation and server applications, but we likely wouldn't see such a beast until 2005 when AMD transitions to 65nm process.
