DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM

Take your pick.

DVD-RAM can only be used in DVD-RAM drives. No other DVD drive will read them. Stores 4.7Gb for a V2 drive/disk.

DVD-R is readable by just about everything, including standalone units. DVD-R can be written by DVD-R drives and some DVD-RW drives Note that there are TWO types of DVD-R. DVD-R(G) and DVD-R(A). The G is for general (IE consumer) and the A is for Authoring. A DVD-R(G) drive won't write DVD-R(A), and vise versa.
Stores 4.7Gb

DVD+R works with most drives, and is a write once version of DVD+RW.

DVD-RW works with most drives, but some DVD drives have problems reading them. Writing requires a DVD-RW drive. stores 4.7Gb

DVD+RW works with most drives, although some DVD, DVD-R and DVD-RAM drives have difficulties. Writing requires a DVD+RW drive. DVD+RW drives will usually write CD-R and CD-RW too. Stores 4.7Gb

Check the pricing for blank media as well. Cheaper media has a tendancy to be less compatible (!) if a drive is going to have problems. (Bit like the CD-RW disks with some CD units)

Most video DVDs will not fit on a writable DVD. This is because most video DVDs are now dual layer, which is 9.4Gb of storage.

A good way to simplify would be to get a burner capable of DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW. The only one I know of in the market is made by Sony. It just came out last month and costs about $300. I think it's called the A500, and it's even capable of 4x for one of those modes.

I'm looking to buy myself one for Christmas.

I'll probably be getting one after the 1st of the year.
I've seen them at the show for about $249. After the first they should have dropped by then.
