VERY SLOW transfer speed from drive to drive

hi all,

it literally takes about 2 minute to transfer a 500k file from one drive to another.

the event properites give me this message:

Quote:
The device, \Device\Scsi\hpt3xx1, did not respond within the timeout period.
and

Quote:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.
could the drive be defective?

yes, i can browse it just fine. i'm using the 4g4a+ and the cuda 20gig in the raid controller.

edit: it takes a really long time to boot into windows after the boot logo. if i remove the drive, all is well.

one more thing that may be worth mentioning. when i'm copying from the suspected drive to another drive, the processor utilization goes to 100%. it's not true when copying files from the other drives, not including the suspected drive.

I had a similar problem with a laptop. It would take almost 20 min to boot into windows. And programs ran just fine once they were loaded into main memory. It was the HDD. Changed it out and it worked just fine

BTW:
My problem was cumulitive. That is it started off small and eventually got worse and worse.

interesting Staz... but my drive just started acting up about 4 hours ago.

i did some trouble shooting. i transferred the suspected drive from the primary slave raid controller to:

1. secondary slave raid controller. no good

2. master primary IDE controller and everything works fine. YAY!

btw, there is a drive present in both primary and secondary raid controllers, and i'm not running the drives in any raid configurations. just normal drives on the raid controllers.

i'm beginning to suspect it's either the rounded cables or both raid controller are bad.

i set the supected drive to master and moved the drive to one of the IDE controlleres and it works just fine. i figured that the drive os ok. either the rounded cables or the RAID controller might be bad.

ya Holst, gotta go pick up anoth set of cable. i throw (give) all my flat cable away.

i'm still wondering why the primary drive on that raid controller that the suspected drive used to be installed in still works.

try a a THOROUGH scan disk on it. I'm sure it will find the bad sectors and then your probs with it should be gone.

i've tried normal and there is no such thing as thorough scan on win2k/xp unless i have it set scandisk to auto fix file system errors. in any case, Disk Management doesn't even see the drive. oh well, i guess i can live with it on a normal IDE controller for now. i'm ready to get a PE chipset board anyway.

thanks for the support fellas.. i found out that it was a loose 4-pin molex connector. it kept connecting and disconnection the drive which isn't good at all. luckily, the drive still works 100%.

I hate it when that happens.
