AMD vs INTEL for music Worstation?

I'm trying to build a system for a friend. He needs the best bang for buck system to upgrade his home studio. Just want your recommendations on what route to go with, AMD or Intel.
His budget is about £400 Sterling or $600 US.
Thanks.

A few years ago I'm pretty sure that intel was generally seen as better for multimedia work than AMD. And in using some visualisations for Sonique 2 (one of my very accurate benchmarks) at similar clock speeds, the intels always seem to be able to do things more smoothly. As for audio I don't know but these Visualisations were running at the same time as mp3 decoding so maybe intel is better. At current CPU speeds though I think that either cpu will get the job done quickly.

AMD will probably get you a more powerful CPU for the money.

Intel chipsets will generally have lower PCI latency, that can be important when doing audio work, you will tend to get better PCI soundcard compatability as well.

Intel with SSE optimisations will encode music pretty well.

Id definately go intel, probably 845GE based board with PC-2700 and a P4 2.4B procesor.
