Quick easy question about usb ports...

I just purchased a BEIGE CHIEFTEC Server Chasis Workstation Tower . It comes with two usb 2.0 ports and a firewire port.

The problem is, I was try to connect the pins on the usb ports to the ones on my Epox 8KHA+ motherboard under usb3.

My front usb port still doesn't work. Is this because I connected the pins wrong or is it because the usb 2.0 ports are not compatible with the pins on my motherboard?

My motherboard has usb 1 connectors.

Anybody has this kinda case and mobo and have their front usb connectors working. I followed the instructions from the chieftec website and connected each colored pin to the appropriate pins on the mobo.

I don't have this case or motherboard. But on my Iwill you have to go into the BIOS and enable the USB ports. You may want to check it out.

AFAIK, USB2 is pin compatible with USB1.
For each port, are there 5 wires? V, D-, D+, Gr, Gr?

I followed the diagrams from the chieftec website
http://www.chieftec.com/products/Newg/Install.htm
"HOW to Connect USB & 1394"

The front usb port on the case has a total of 9 pins which connect to the mobo. According to the diagrams pin 9 on the mobo is not used. The mobo has 10 pins in total for the usb.

It very much sounds like you've got the pinout wrong!

If you connected USB connector using the pinout that Chieftec use, then it's definately wrong for the EPoX board. As an example, one of the Chieftec pins is ground. The same pin on the EPoX board is +5V. I hope that no damage has been done to the EPoX board!

Here's an attempt to match them up.

Code:
Chieftec	EPOX	Purpose
1 1	+5V
2 2	-D1
3 3	+D1
4 4	Ground
5 5	Ground
6 10	+5V
7 9	-D2
8 8	+D2
9 N/C N/C	N/C
10 7	Ground
Just make sure that this matches the data you get from both your EPoX manual, and the Chieftec data!

Keep in mind that each usb port uses 4 or 5 wires.. make sure you don't accidently switch one. Also, the missing wire is for one of the grounds. so try connecting the first 5 and test that the port works before you connect the last 4.

Technically, each USB port uses 4 wires. The extra wire is a cable ground for any shielding that may be present.

I think Solosmooth had one USB port right, but the short to ground on the other USB +5V line shut both USB ports down for safety! Thank goodness for sensible design. Would have been smoke and a dead mobo otherwise.

Damn, I gotta be more careful.
Yeah that's exactly what the problem was.
Lucky for me everything works just fine.
