Unhappy Dying PC...

OK, I have my suspicion that I know what this problem is, but I'd like some more experienced opinions.

My home computer, an IBM Aptiva that is about 3 1/2 years old, seems to be dying. It hangs at POST, and will or will not boot up. I get no error messages or beeps. Sometimes it boots with all drives (floppy, CD-ROM, CD-RW & external Zip), and sometimes it misses the CD-ROM & CD-RW. Rebooting may or may not bring them back. Sometimes it loses those 2 drives in the middle of everything... the other night I was playing a CD & it had stopped. I thought it was over. Turns out the CD-ROM drive was gone again. Things have been starting to lag in the middle of a session also... IE, especially. Then when I try to reboot, it locks up & I have to cold boot. I'm running XP Pro as my O/S.

The few other details I can remember at the moment... it's a 400-something MHz machine, 256 MB RAM. 40GB HD, replaced in September. I'm guessing the motherboard is dying. How close am I?

Thanks...

When I replaced the hard drive in September. I don't think it's the OS.

Another thing...

A few times last week it was giving me some error (at POST) about the drive being changed, yet nothing had been changed.

It could be a number of things, CPU, motherboard, power supply. Pretty hard to say. Have you got spare parts to can try swapping out with?

I would take everything out and give it a good dusting/cleaning and put everything back in and make sure it is all seated well. Check the airflow thru the case. Try running it with the case off and a fan blowing on it. Also try and vacum out the PSU.

My guess is a motherboard, but it may also be a cooling issue. I had one of these odl IBM Aptivas and when it died it was the motherboard. It was having random errors and lock ups. And when i say random that's what they were. Ran the gamut.

Best of luck to ya
