Maxtor Diamondmax 9+ compatibility w/ S-ATA

I encountered a problem that appears consistent on the web.

The Diamondmax 9+, which by the way is Maxtor's flagship ATA133 HDD, is not compatible w/ S-ATA through sata adaptors. The controller cannot detect the drive at all.

I've banged my head for hours trying to get mine to work. I've confirmed that everything works, just not in this one particular combination.

I am not sure if this is unique to my particular models of other components, so I'll list them here:
NF7-s v2
serallel adaptor v1, bundled w/ mobo
160gig 8meg cache Diamondmax 9+

SI (the mfgr of the sata controller on the nf7s) has stated that maxtors on adaptors are not compatible... but that is in reference to the corruption problems. (Now it's hard to corrupt a drive when it isn't being connected).

My other maxtors run fine on the sata.
Can anyone confirm or refute this conclusion?
