GeForce FX 5900 Ultra vs. ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

wanting peoples opinions on which is better:

the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra or the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.

Its a hard one to judge. Depending on what site you read (who paid the most bribes) either card performs better in differnt benchmarks. Personally i'd got for the ATI 9800 and get a zalman passive cooler. The FX5900 is good at some things, v good, but at other things its poor, v poor.
I think the ATI card has better overall capabilities but its so close its hard to call.
price also is a big factor, last time i looked the 9800 was cheaper, but i havn't looked for a few weeks.
Either card will give you awsome performance for todays games and mildly average performance in HL2/Doom3. If you can struggle on for another few months till the games are out that REQUIRE an upgrade then you'll be able to purchase a card better suited for the task. the new wave of cards are out soonish and if your prepaired to pay top dollar for the fastest card, you would feel a little peeved that your card is superseeded in 1 - 3 months time.

P.S awsome overclock on that cpu you have from 1533mhz to 1566mhz, or is that a typo?

aparently there was an auction between nvidia and ati, the winner of the auction got to be able to bundle Half life 2 with their graphics card, and i think the game would be coded to run smoother on that card.

ATI won...

the half life 2 bench for ati was sent out to promote the card so it was faster the same way that nv will beat ati in doom when it is released also the bench was done with older drivers for the fx card

I may be a bit of a cynic, but I'd await conformation in various forums before deciding... a lot less going on behind the scenes.

People on the whole are more critical about hardware they pay for that those who are paid to review hardware.

I'll just say that there is cause to doubt the veracity of any of the larger review sites... Given the gap between the cards and the games that use them as well as how fast card prices fall... one loses nothing but ego satisfaction by waiting until the current best and brightest falls a step behind.

I tend to keep mine until it actually suffers in game play. OK! OK! until I can pretend it actually suffers in game play":O}

, that's why it's great to have young kids... I just 'hand me down' to them when I get the urge. OTOH, the best card in my house is an oc'd 8500LE. Works fine for the games I play, and I have better places to put my money.

I'm using a 4600Ti and pass the oldies down the line on on my 3 folders.
