Toshiba hard drive help needed

A friend of mine is having some problems with the hard drive in his laptop, so I promised to ask for help in here.

* Laptop is a Compaq Armada E700 (Pentium II CPU 400 MHz)
* Hard drive is a Toshiba 10 GB ATA.

Does Toshiba have a diagnostics tool - or at least something for fixing bad sectors and the like? (Like the tools other hdd companies have).
Something that works off a boot disk would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

first step is replacing the firmware.. will update the "internal" drivers, and has saved quite a few old drives in my day without losing info.
make a dos boot disk with scandisk may be the option you are looking for.

Thanks cadaveca, is the firmware available from their website? How do we go about replacing the firmware - I've never done so with a hard drive before.

replacing firmware is just like installing a driver...all hardware includes a bios chip. it's just a matter of flashing the bios like a mobo.i don't know about finding one specific for your hd, but i would google it and see(try firmware upgrade toshiba)

Once again, thank you for your help! We'll try that and see if it helps.
