Funny hard drive sound

It's nothing to be alarmed of I never have a Mic ready to record the sound...But every once and awhile The drive will make a funny "clunk" curning sound then go back to normal... Like I said before their is nothing wrong with the drive...Oh and it's a Ibm I don't know the model it came with my Ibm....I wish ibm would stop useing the stupid model names like 120GXP and soon...All I know is the drive is a 15.6Gb..

This could be the click of death. I would back up all important data then I would use IBM's disk diagnostic tool you can download it from the IBM site. Run the test and see what it says if it finds something wrong it will give you a code you can use to RMA it if it is still under warranty. I hope all is well haven't seen you around Overclockers.com lately. by the way are you still folding?

ya know.. the same thing happens to me with my Quantum drive.. There any diagnostic that'll work with it?

The quantum site doensn't seem to provide hard drive support anymore.. maybe since their merger with Maxtor..

Also I forgot to say my Maxtor 5.7Gb drive does it also but not as much as my Primary Drive Because I don't use my Maxtor that much.

I just downloaded That SMARTDefender from Ibm did a Smart test and both Drives come back as beeing "Healty"

Mine came back clean too.. Strange thing is, it seems to sit and seek/read intensively every once in a while when the system is idle..

I'm not running Folding or any other background utilities from what I can gather.. It just sits there and has its HD orga$m and I listen, totally baffled..

hmm.. could this be a defrag issue? its only a 12.7gig

it does have the S.M.A.R.T capability..

Altho, its only been doing it within the past 2mos or so.. and that was right after a clean format and install of new OS (98se)..

eh.. go fig..

I guess it's nothing anyway...both of my drives come back as good. But I still would like to find out what that sound is.. Oh I had no clue my ibm drive had a Temp sensor on it... Not that my case is too hot or anything but it could help me out in the summer when my room goes over 92 F.

Wow An Ibm?

Just found this out...I wanted to do a "Quick" SMART Test..and it said this....

"Primary Master (IBM-DTTA-351680)
Drive does not support self-test.

Same goes along with my Maxtor

and same goes for the Extended SMART test.... I guess the only thing it can do is read the SMART info.... Or maybe Ibm added new stuff for SMART to check on the hard drive... as this hard drive's date is labed 11/24/98......
