Installing XP on a SATA question

OK, here's the deal...I only have a Windows XP upgrade. So...in order to install XP, i gotta install 98 first. As far as i know, there's no way in hell im installing 98 on the SATA. So...would it be possible to install 98 on my ide HD then run the XP upgrade from there and get the XP on to the SATA? I know I need the drivers on a floppy and all and load them during the setup...but i heard you have to disconnect any ide HD when installing XP onto a SATA. Is this true or should I be fine installing XP onto the SATA upgrading from 98 on the ide?

You might be able to just copy a couple of files to your hard drive, then boot up with boot diskettes and install. I'm not sure what files would be looked for, but I know that we used to do that when recovering from hd failures. I had a couple of hds commit suicide and all I had was the upgrade cd. I'm sure there must be someone on this forum that remembers some of this too.

Do you have another working system you can use to create the WINxx boot disks?

Is the Win98 cd bootable? Can you just boot up to a windows command line with it and then install XP?

Good luck!

I'm not sure about XP but with the win98 upgrade version you didn't need to have Win95 installed. If you tried to install from the upgrade CD it would ask you to insert your win95 CD Rom.

Have you tried this with XP yet?

But did you go into bios and set your first boot device to cd, then boot up with the XP cd and see if it asks for your previous versions installation cd?

Just wondering....

Thanks,

Thanks,
Win98 Upgrade worked that way, too. and it would accept a factory restore disk.

The best way would be what themaste suggested. But because you're installing on SATA, you will need to pop in the floppy with the SATA drivers at the beginning of the install so WinXP will recognize your SATA drive.

k...ill try it out, but I coulda swore i tried booting off the winxp disk and it wouldnt have it. THis again is probably due to the fact that I got this off my schools ftp and put it on a cd. So I'm sure its not the retail winxp upgrade, but it is legit.

Have you used it before?
If not, are you sure you burned it correctly to be bootable?

Finally got it to work...it turns out my school left out one file in the I386 folder...the winnt.exe file. Don't ask me why, but they only kept the winnt32.exe. Anyway, I got the file off a friend's Win XP Pro cd and the bootable img as well using IsoBuster. Burned a new WinXP cd with the winnt.exe file and made it bootable with that image and everything went well. Thanx for everyones help!

If you have Ghost,

You could try installing 98 on the IDE drive, then ghost the drive to the SATA drivefollowed by the upgrade the SATA drive to XP.

Give it a try. Good luck
