wireless

Righty ho... so I have just recently had my line connected by the wonderful people BT on the day that they said they would, champion.

Now i'm looking at options for getting my broadband racked phatt. Now, as I am in rented property, i think the wireless is going to be the way to go. Now the thing that is niggling me about this is "can Win98 handle wireless?" i have this voice in my head saying that it cant, but i might just be going mental, if someone could confirm or deny this possibility, that would be champion!

thanks in advance peeps

BT! Argh noo! Oh well whats done is done
A quick browse around some of the manufacturers websites indicates many have windows 98 drivers
for instance this d-link pci card lists 98
http://support.dlink.com/products/vi...d=DWL%2D520%2B

As long as there are drivers 98 should just treat it like any other network conection and the manufacturer will provide any software for configuration

one of my friends has a wireless house as there was lots of them and to much hassle to wire it all up + it was rented but the owners did want it internet enabled.
the person i know is on wireless and win98 so it does work allbeit abit sketchy i think.

It shouldn't be a problem. Most wireless nics have drivers for 98. You should, if possible, get the same brand for the router and nic if possible. If you get any speed higher than 54mbps, most likely it is using proprietary protocols specific to the mfgr. Also, unlike standard ethernet, some brands don't play nice with each other.

For wireless, I use a PC card for the notebook, and a USB nic for one of my machines. Easy to set up. On top of the driver, you will have to install the wireless config utility that comes with the nic. WinXP has a default utility to handle WEP, and other configs, but with win98, you will have to depend on the utility that comes with the nic.

unfortunatly, it is the only option where I'm at, no NTL or Telewest services here, which I was pretty suprised at tbh, nevermind, im sure it'll work out!

thanks for responses guys. had been reading a couple of bits a pieces which suggested that getting same manufacturer all round was the best scheme

yeah but you can use someone other than bt for adsl, I'm on metronet and I get 1mbit unlimited download for £28 a month and if I have a low usage month (yeah right ) where I use 200mb or less it's only £13, and only 0.0025p per mb after that up to the max of £28
BT aren't one of the best providers by a long way
