Anyone Know anything about music?

Hey guys,

I have a friend who is computer iliterate. He is also a DJ. He has about 2000 CDs and dual deck CD players. He recently ran into a guy that was his show from his laptop. He liked the fact that the guy didn't have carry all the CDs but he didn't like the fact that there was a 2-3 second gap inbetween tracks.

He came to me and asked if he could get a laptop with sufficiant power and audio quality to do a professional show from. Also is there software outthere that will let him start a track befor the previous one finishes so that the songs can overlap, and so that he talk over the tracks and feed it through the same system. Also is there software outthere that will let him seperate CD audio into it's indivual tracks so that he can edit and create his own mixes?

Thnx in advance
Maurice

Something as simple as WinAmp could handle the audio playback. It wouldn't overlap, but with a little planning, he could put the music in the playlist and WinAmp would queue it up with very small (like millisecond) gaps. Cubase Audio I think would do something like this as well, but I don't even know if that is still sold.

I'm guessing that he is going to want an external USB sound card and amp, since I don't know of any laptops that have anything close to hi-fi type sound systems (even if you ignore the crappy speakers). Áedán might have some suggestions there.

I'm sure the capability to do what he wants exists, but it's liable to be a bit pricey.

You can use any standard player. and rip all the cd's to mp3...the ripping takes a few minutes, and you want 320kbps, but any old pc will do. Pretty much every radio station in town here uses pc's for all thier radio shows, so for a DJ, it should be just right.

You simply run the pc to an amplifier to power the speakers, and if you get one with an EQ, then you are all set! Or you can use the EQ from the player...such as WinAmp.

Steinberg Cubasis is a good program, but is more for midi mixing.
