problems with liteon dvdrw sohw-1633s

hi I have a problem with my burner, the problem is that it is supposed to write 1x-16x speed but even if the discs are capable of the higher speeds it doesnt burn that fast.. sometimes its even slower.. for example in nero I chose 8x but the disc took about 44 minutes to complete. and when I burn a DVDRW in just 2.4x it takes about 23 mins.. and now im wondering what tha **** I´ve bought.. could someone please help

I´ve used memorex dvd+r 8x, dvd+r 4x and I have used a sony dvd-rw supposed to burn at 2.4x but I can only burn at 1x and the writer is supposed to be able to burn at 4x on both dvd-+rw

Are you on Windows XP?
If so right click my computer, go to properties, or go to control panel, system, then go to the hardware tab, then device manager, goto ide ata/atapi controllers, and select which channel the writer is installed on (probably secondary) and goto advanced settings and it should say what mode the devices are set to, either a udma mode or pio mode
also what version of nero are you on?
