I believe pretty soon, they're supposed to move from flourescent backlit screens to LED backlit screens for LCD. That should help brightness a bit for use during the daytime.

Graham,

I guess I glanced over your previous post somehow. My speedreading must be ignoring more stuff than it should...

Oh yeah, one other thing. LCD panels have native resolution. With a CRT, you can flip resolution back and forth and as long as the dot pitch is small enough, the picture will scale pretty well. In contrast, LCD has one fixed resolution that will look sharp. At other resolutions, larger or smaller, it tends to fuzz out and the picture isn't as sharp.

No problem we all do it

I remember reading 8 or 9 years ago how LEP screens would be available by now, along with holographic disk drives and fast adsl

Well, ADSL2+ was just approved for use in Aus. And what the hell is a LEP screen?

Yeah LCD's have a native resolution, mine is 1280x1024 @ 12ms.

Light Emitting Polymer, kinda like an LED but a screen. I think most of the research on it is being done in cambridge

http://www.cdtltd.co.uk/default.asp

It promises to revolutionise display technology, low power, flat and flexable screens

And I thought we would get OLEDs as the next step in display technology, I believe they are already being use on some digital cameras

The difficulty with LEP/OLED (as they're pretty much the same thing) is the stability of the LEDs used. Their lifetime is shorter by comparison to LCD and CRT displays, so they're not quite ready for primetime is consumer applications. Hopefully that'll change as the researchers get to grips with the materials and their decay.

TFT is just a form of LCD, it stands for thin film transistor
