Which is better, Radeon 9500 or 9550

The 9500 is probably better, but whats the difference, i was sure they were both part of the 95xx series??

not quite. The 9500 is a 9700 core with half it's pipelines disabled, some with the help of the omega drivers can re-enable them and become a 9700
The 9550 is a cut down 9600, still with 4 pipelines but no more to enable.
Also I believe that there is a clock speed limit placed on the 9550 so you need special drivers to enable overclocking.
Given the choice I would go for a 9500 thanks to the chance of unlocking the pipelines.

ATI 9700 Pro - The GPU is clocked at 325Mhz, 8 rendering pipelines, 256 bit memory bus, memory is clocked at 310 Mhz
ATI 9700 - The GPU has been detuned to 275Mhz, still 8 rendering pipelines, 256 bit memory bus, memory has been detuned to 270Mhz
ATI 9500 Pro - The GPU is clocked at 275Mhz, 8 rendering pipelines, card is detuned to 128 bit memory bus, and memory is at 270Mhz
ATI 9500 - The GPU is clocked at 275Mhz, 4 rendering pipelines cut out to leave 4, 128 bit memory bus, and memory is at 270Mhz

here's a 9550 comparision, althoug htere about 6 different version of this card, with varying pipelines, memory busses and clockspeeds. In current marketing schemes, it's performance is better than a 9500, but lower than a 9600. Most current 9550's can be modded to 9600's, and some of them to 9600XT's(usually cooling upgrade is required)

I have a Radeon 9550, but i soft modded it using a 9600XT Bios (clocked down a touch). I currently can get the Memory to run at 250mhz, but i am Running at 4x AGP, would 8x AGP speed improve my chances of overclocking any further??

8x Not Supported on Mobo, and No Fastwrires Enabled aswell

The agp speed will likely not have any effect on overclocking, disabling fastwrites is the best way to help improve thigns without a performance drop
It's likely that the memory used just isn't of high enough quality to handle higher speeds.

Thumbs up I dont know about the 9500 but

I had a gigabyte 9550
then an ASUS 9600xt
now a leadtech A6600GT-TDH

The 9600xt benched only about to 30% better than the 9550.
This was a good result for the 9550, considering the much much lower clock speeds. The 9550 was quiet (this model had no fan) and could be overclocked using modded drivers, with good results.

The 9550 was a cheap card, and from what i could gather, the 4 pipelines were it - you could not mod it to a 9600.

The 9600XT is substantially dearer than a 9550 but only a wee bit cheaper than a Geforce 6600

so for just a few more bucks the Nvidia is the way to go, with almost twice the performance than the 9600xt, and quieter
