Problem with floppy drive

We had a power spike the other night, and incidently it was the same night I put cable sleeving on my PSU wires. So to eliminate the obvious. Holding the wires, with the plug pointing upwards/forwards. Should it be Yellow-Black-Black-Red or Red-Black-Black-Yellow?

BTW: Does it matter which way the two black wires are?

The light on the floppy drive is always on, but the light is dull. Thanks guys.

You want something like this then! Picture of connector.

If you've got the +12V and +5V around the wrong way, you can do a lot of damage to the floppy and the motherboard.

Well that explains alot.

#1: The "power spike" was the floppy drives death, causing the computer to shut down.
#2: Why the floppy drive doesnt work.
#3: That also proves its better to be born lucky than beautiful, my mo/bo still works

Thanks for you help Aedan. I dont use it. Ive never used it, i added it as an after thought while building, I just wanted to know why I didnt work, went I made sure all my compents still worked after adding cable sleeving. Which they did until I tried to use the floppy drive. The only thing I use my floppy for, is a shelf to sit cathrode power converters on.

It's good that nothing else died. I still retain a floppy drive, simply because I've had to recover the BIOS that way more than once... I figure it's cheap insurance!

Ive got spares. But my case is poorly designed. To remove the floppy drive, I have to remove both side panels to access the screws. BUT the motherboard is screwed to the side panel. My case doesnt have a motherboard bay. But its all good.

If I need a firmware update, i'll just make a bootable CD-ROM on another PC.

I find the bootable CD-ROM doesn't work too well when you're stuck with only the BIOS boot block, as has happened to me on a few occasions (on a number of different systems, I hasten to add!)

on a decent floppy drive you can't put it the wrong way; the plug is roughly in a U shape. The inside of that U should go over the body(plastic) of the socket on the floppy-drive ...
there 's also a little ridge/bump on the socket side and a corresponding pit in the plug that should click on the bump. That way they both hold together ...

I had the wires the wrong way around. I had the red and yellow switched.
