as far as I read somewhere (recently) the PCI-E slots will be PCI compatibel for a while so as to provice backward compatibility with PCI (of olden days) for some time !

You 'll need to verify that in your manual though to be on the safe side ...

I don't think the problem is a lack of pci slots, I just don't think he can use them, I'd guess it's the 6800ultra's cooler getting in the way

Creative are definately developing sound cards based on the Audigy 2 and Audigy 4 pro chipsets for PCI-E, as some pictures have already leaked, but it could be a while off. Until PCI-E is universally accepted, there isnt money in making cards for it, since there isnt a large market.

I do know that you can get RAID cards for PCI-E now, and SCSI as well, as Ive seen them both on an Nforce pro workstation, but I think they would be out of your pricerange.

Yeah thats the best thing about the NV5, I only loose 1 pci slot because of the way the fan is ducted, the 2nd can still be used without fear of restricting air flow

Mate, I know what you mean. Creative make the best audio hardware on the market by a mile, and have been doing it for almost 15 years, but their programmers have yet to master QuickBASIC. Anyone who has used Creative Playcentre, or RemoteCentre knows the feeling of an involuntary enema as those programs are virtually unworkable. Their drivers are in equally bad shape. I doubt much will change as they move to PCI-E.

Brad have you tried the NGO modified creative Audigy / Audigy 2 / Live! drivers I uploaded? http://files.aoaforums.com/index.php?dir=125

They are actually quite good, and have made a decent difference for me with both my Audigy 1 and 2. Better quality sound and most importantly, better performance in games, now that the driver has reduced my EAX overhead.

I won't be buying Creative ever again either.

In 2000 they left all their custmoers from the 1st Sound Blaster Live! Platinum products in the lurch with bad drivers.
The problem was compounded by the badly designed VIA chipsets of those days.
Those 2 together created unusable audio.

Many, in the end, threw their dear SB Live! Platinum out and bought another Soundcard (Hercules Game Theater or Terratec) and their troubles were solved in more than 9 out of 10 cases !

That was very bad support both from Creative and VIA.

I 'll never buy VIA again either.
They had produced and sold 3 or 4 generations of chipsets with the same non-conformality problem before they owned up under a lot of pressure !
But thousands and thousands had boards that functioned badly !

After 2000 I bought anything but VIA and Creative.

Hmmmm... Ive actually got every VIA chipset since super socket 7 (VIA MVP3) through KT133 KT266 KT333 KT400 KT600 K8T800Pro and ive never had a problem with any of my Live! or Audigy cards. The drivers suck, but its only optimisation and performance that was effected, never function. What chipset did you have trouble with? or was it an intel?

i believe the problem was with the kt133a (686b southbridge) chipset and the live 5.1 had major issues with each other. creaf make good hardware, poor drivers really. i prefered my aureal 3d based card back in the day. but then creaf sue'd them so many times and lost / aquited that they bankrupted a3d
oh and for pci-e 1x cards, they're thin on the ground atm, only really raid cards and such are using the extra b/w

There was a known issue with certain versions of the Live cards, in that the ACPI header in the PCI implementation was faulty.

well, I wouldn't wait to go and buy a new card if had a usable one.
I 'd go for the Arctic Cooling VGA cooler I suggested and use my old PCI card in the slot(s) next to it ...
