i will explain the price estimate on a later date, as more feedback is presented.

Think in terms of functionality tho, and not as a console. Microsoft's idea of the Xbox360 is not just a gaming console..hence the "360" in te name instaed of XBOX2.

$799 is a good price point, for what is offered, IMHO. First 8 months should see that price, and then a $200-$300 price drop in june/july of the following year.

If ati and Nvidia can sell videocars @ $700, a whole console can sell for the same price.

in regards to the functionality of the graphics chip being so large, remember that it uses a unified pipe, unlike current tech, which almost needs the extra pipes for smoothness. As well, the cost to make jsut the chip has not increased...they still get the same # of chips per wafer, so costs are similar that a current x850 chip, say, with a small increase.

meh, but they have no taste. E46 is too new and shiny, and fat. They need an E30 M3. Thats old school BMW Heaps of power, no weight, rear wheel drive, and plenty of tail out, no traction control action.

Or a 2002 TII.

no comments on how good it looks? How good it looks compared to most people's "high end" computers?

So far all we have seen is pretty pictures rendered at low resolution, with no indication of what frame rate it will be displayed at.

uh oh....

We are disappointed that all of Microsoft's Xbox 360 kiosks were running G5 systems as we wanted to see real hardware in action, not behind glass, but Apple should be quite happy.
Quote:
A pair of Apple Powermac G5 systems were actually running the Xbox 360 demos, not the 360 console. The consoles in the kiosks weren't actually running, they were just for show - now you know why all the controllers were wired.
More HERE

One real machine was found tho...
Quote:
The machine was running ATI's R520 Ruby demo, which took about a week to port to the 360 from the original PC version. The hardware in this particular box wasn't running at full speed, but ATI mentioned that they could if need be.
I have the quake4 demo too, if ya would like it.

Looks like they're having to do a bit of a rush job, given that the demo machines are G5's!

And 2 of them, to boot. LoL. Demos run on 2 g5's, w/ 2 x850xt 512mb, low detail....is the $799 price i quoted seem so far off now? More power than 2 g5's? Remember, I said performance EXPLOSION

I thought that there were 2 G5's in each cabinet because there are 2 screens, back to back? Or is there 4 G5's in each of those cabinets?

1 teraflop...from one g5?

Uh...lol. The XBOX360 IS, in essence, a souped up G5, with the r500 as the visual processing unit/northbridge/memory controller.

Remember those shots i posted a while back of ATI chipsets with a square of GDDR3 next to it? I have a very sneaking suspicion that they are pretty much one and the same unit, albeit tweaked to microsoft's needs. I DO know that theese chips have been sampling since at least November...
48 pipelines, configurable between shader or pixel operations, so not the unified shader pipe that it was thought to be, but rather a customizable pipe arrrangement. This functionality in itself is what makes the xbox360 so much easier to program for, over the PS3.
I see the link between the powerpc cpu and chipset sharing the same bus as the Gddr3 architechture, as ATI has got this bit down to an art, and thier memory controller almost puts AMD's to shame(actually, it does!). Becuase of the huge amt of bandwidth available, like 27gb, or some crazyness, and being able to assign pipes to the rendering function you need will make the xbox360 quite the performer. I think that ATI/microsoft have realized that visual detailing is of the utmost importance to the consumer, with reality tv being so popular, why not bring that experience, that realism, into the livingroom. This is where they can get thier foot in the door for having a huge server in every house, and nothing but interface consoles in each room.

In regards to the answer to your question, danrok, you can judge for youself, after checking out this pic, and that only one audio jack is being used....for both sides?(both sides had thier own surround speaker set).

Second pic...mini 3cpu g5, anyone?

-pics from anandtech.
