I think you'd be stuck with SATA 1. Here's hoping that SATA 2 is backwards compatible!

A SATA1 drive should work with a SATA2 controller, but it will only transfer data at SATA1 speeds. Depending on how the controller is implemented, having a SATA1 device on the controller MAY cause EVERYTHING on the controller to run at SATA1 speeds.

A SATA 1.5Gb/s device should work just fine with a SATA 3Gb/s controller. In fact, some SATA 3Gb/s drives shipped function in SATA 1.5Gb/s mode until the SATA 3Gb/s mode is enabled. I had to do this with the Hitachi 80GB SATA 3Gb/s drives I purchased for a new system.

Since SATA is a serial technology, SATA 1.5Gb/s and SATA 3Gb/s devices on the same controller should not cause everything to operate at the slower SATA speed (unlike traditional IDE/ATA).

Now if you are asking if you can enable SATA 3Gb/s speeds on your SATA 1.5Gb/s hard drive, chances are, you probably cannot. I may have to see if the SATA 1.5Gb/s Hitachi drives I have give me that option...

Cheers!
Dave
