Unhappy Dead Acer/Benq CD-ROM????

I have a seven year old Acer 632A-165 CD-ROM, and for some reason it acts weird. Oftentimes I try to hook it up to various computers that I build, but on certain machines, it will refuse to operate. I had it in an old Packard Bell with Windows 98SE and it worked fine. However most recently I pitched the PB and placed the Acer CD-ROM into my PcChips M599LMR with Windows 2000, and the that's when the CD-ROM misbehaved. Upon placing a CD in the tray and closing the door, it would "freeze" up the whole computer. The only way to free up the computer was to shut off the power switch. Well needless to say that was crap, so I put in a different CD-ROM drive. But I'm just curious as to what is going on with that Acer 632A-165 drive. It has the latest firmware which is "32VP", so I wouldn't think it was that. I wonder if I should throw it away, or maybe it's not really broken. If anyone has any opinions or ideas, feel free to post.

Regards,
Carl Reed

Are the jumper settings on the drive correct?

Yeah the jumps are fine. I think this drive may be past it's prime. It only seems to work selectively with certain machines.
