I'd like games to not be so reliant on DirectX.

EDIT: You changed the question, and now my answer looks totally irrelevant. Erm... Biggest help would probably be a huge database of overclocks on various hardware, cooling methods used, voltages, stepping codes, etc.

Thats quite a broad ranging question.

I'd have to say the biggest help is having an expert on hand.

Ahh but in the case of yourself being said expert, said help is rendered redundant due to the frequency of which others need use of said tool

(I just call myself a tool, tee hee)

I'd have to say the most helpful thing is having someone with experience on hand. An expert. A tool, like GrahamGarside.

If you choose components that work well together--this requires research--and build the machine painfully slowly with attention to the smallest detail, you usually need no help to get it running. Sheesh, some people I know assemble a PC in 35 minutes. Then they wonder why it doesn't work right!

Heh cloasters....takes me 15 minutes to build a system now...from boxes to inside the case and powered-up.

first build is always outside the case, for component testing...how long does it take to plug in the parts, and fire it up?

Fortunately for me, they work pretty good every time, except for the problems i have had with getting ATI cards that were bunk from the start.

But as you say, cloasters, i'll spend months on deciding what hardware to buy...heck, i got 9125 in 3dmark05!

I think internet explorer actually being usable would help, the amount of peoples systems I've put firefox on because they constantly get spyware etc.. from internet explorer, it's not even funny.

Wowsa, 15 minutes? Shazam! Maybe I'll get smart and ""breadboard"" the components before putting them in the case next time.

I can take a system apart in about 10 minutes. My current record for putting them together completely though is around two months

lol just have the problems with new ATI parts that i have, and you'll get enough practice.

Heck, i even wear an anti-static strap...I wonder how many people kill hardware installing it and giving it static damage?

I've never ever seen or myself damaged equipment with static (touch wood, or more apropriately metal) I just make sure I touch the case before I do anything with my system

I ground myself by touching the electric burners on the stove repeatedly. Try as I may, touching one of them while it's on full blast really hurts. Just not macho enough, sigh.

I dont use a wrist strap, and my case is plastic. I ground myself by the touching my DVDRW though.

Does wearing rubber soled shoes have any effect on static and the death of components.

It took me 6 hours, to put my PC together. From the kit form case, and components in boxes. To booting an OS and running 3Dmark01.

If it takes 15 minutes to assemble a working PC by a seasoned professional, leaving aside the preliminary preparation work which can take months, for right now, how dare anyone posit that entropy doesn't exist?

When you can destroy a motherboard in 1/1000th of a second from not thinking before acting...

Perhaps entropy isn't at work here? Just the same olde "Oh God, pride of man, broken in the dust again?"
