Samsungs Hybrid Blu-ray & HD-DVD combo drive cancelled by Sony and Toshiba

Hey,

Competing companies for next-gen storage Blu-ray (Sony) and HD-DVD (Toshiba) are pulling rank on Samsung for building a hybrid drive which was to support both technologies. Read the article...

http://news.com.com/A+DVD+combo+Dont...3-6024875.html

This seems like a typical "event" like we've seen many times in the IT world. Of course a combo drive would be in the best interest of the end user but of course that can't be said about the technology developers. The war for next-gen storage goes on...

Don't worry so much, the nice folks at HP seem to be more customer oriented: http://news.com.com/HP+backs+both+ri...24.html?tag=nl
I'm sure they will find a good sollution for us, if they want our $$

Isn't saying that HP is good for promoting consumer orientation like saying that herpes is good for promoting monogamy?

Edit: My callous attitude towards HP is founded from troubleshooting several of those little purple bubble crash machines labeled "computers".

Something about cheap comes to mind.. if you're talking about their low end computers. If you're talking about their high end, then HP make some pretty nice machines! (Oh, and they had 64bit processors before Intel and AMD even started thinking about it.)

Once they skim the high pockets they may come back to this to interest us poor folks.

I don't think that those combo drives would be high-end...in max 1-2 years from now

And Áedán, you're very right when you say HP makes some nice and powerfull machines ...tho' I'm talking right now about a nice dual xeon workstation with more than 6 scsi hdds on it in raid 5 or 10 setup that machine rocked.
